Over the past 12-18 months there have been so many
talented bands coming out of South Wales and finding
mainstream success, and it doesn’t look like
things are going to slow down any time soon as already
we have Attack! Attack! who are going from strength
to strength and will be one of the most talked about
Welsh bands in 2009 when the year comes to an end,
but it looks like Attack! Attack! have some fierce
competition with Save Your Breath, the latest South
Wales band who are on the lookout for success with
their debut EP 'Nothing Worth Having Comes Easy'.
It is easy to see why there are so many bands
coming out of Wales and making a good name for
themselves, most of the bands create and play
good music, and where most bands will stop there
and hope the music they play will bring them success,
bands like Save Your Breath don’t take any
chances and work there arses off behind the scenes,
they are a proper D.I.Y band and on their recent
tour where they supported kids In Glass Houses
they spent each day at the venues before the shows
burning CD-R's, labelling them, cutting covers
and packing them into insert trays so they could
sell them during and after the shows, they did
this every day of the tour making well over 200
cd's on a daily basis, now that is commitment
if I have ever seen it, if you are willing to
spend all your spare time promoting your band
then you deserve success, well as long as your
music is good enough.
Well Save Your Breath, need not worry about their
music being good enough as their debut EP 'Nothing
Worth Having Comes Easy' has 6 short slices of
poppy punk that is really easy to get into. The
EP starts off with 'xRYx Almost Died At A Foam
Party', yeah the song title is random and so are
the titles of the other 5 tracks on the EP, it
seems like these guys have gone down the Fall
Out Boy and Panic At The Disco! route when it
comes to song titles in the way that they make
them long and random, anyway back to the song
its short and sweet running at 46 seconds and
gives you a nice introduction as to what Save
Your Breath are all about.
Save Your Breath are more American sounding than
they are Welsh, but that’s what’s
needed these days if your band is going to make
an big impression in the UK and overseas, you
can clearly tell that they are influenced by bands
such as New Found Glory, The Movielife and very
early Brand New.
The most impressive song on the EP is 'Not In
The Mood for Kiwi', the song is about following
scenes and is a full on infectious poppy-punk
that’s going to get you shaking your hips
and jumping up and down to the bouncy riffs and
pop-tastic vocals.
The only negative thing I can see about these
guys is that their isn’t really enough variety
in their music, all the songs seem quite similar,
but on the plus side, the lyrics are well written,
uplifting and witty and every song is preformed
with passion.
This may be the first you have heard of Save
Your Breath but it won’t be the last as
Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong has already snapped
them up on his Adeline Records to release their
music in the USA and Japan, could this be the
start of something big for this talented South
Wales five piece.
4/5
