Album Review
Sizen - What Do You See?Sizen - What Do You See?

Once you get past the awful graffiti style cartoon characters on the cover of this album, it’s a pretty good listen. Instead of the hip-hop you were expecting, you’re treated to some good old fashioned nu metal which doesn’t shy away from using plenty of heavy guitars.

There’s a clear Metallica influence here; so much so that some tracks are in danger of becoming a little clichéd and formulaic. That said, the soaring power riffs are hard not to admire, and they would be an incredible feat to see performed live on stage. In particular, listen out for ‘Asylum’ and ‘I’ll Make You Pay’, and prepare to be amazed.

Unfortunately for the band, the production is a little loose and weak. There is no proper separation of each instrument, and the lyrics drown in the ill-defined noise. Overall, I found the album to be a little samey for my liking. Many of the tracks blend into one another and lack some clear distinction. Some tracks even seemed to give you two for the price of one; the meandering guitar riffs often seem to lose direction, to the point that they forget where they’d started and just begin an entirely different tune. ‘Not The Same’ is a prime example of one such confusing double track.

However, there is some variety in here. ‘Still Me’ provides a much cleaner, fresher sound; and ‘Water It Down’ introduces an interesting funk/groove element. ‘Agrofist’ is also one of the highlights, simply because it is well written and succinct. Many of the other tracks lack this tightness, in particular the title track, ‘What Do You See?’, which starts off fantastically, but loses direction and keeps going well past the 10 minute mark.

The album as a whole is well written and satisfactorily produced, but it certainly lacks passion. It’s a shame, because there is clearly some real talent here, and if you choose your tracks carefully, there is some good material here.

‘What Do You See?’ is out on 19th January 2009.
