It was 2006 when Bring Me The Horizon really hit
the scene and started to become a talked about name
in the music world for various different reasons,
many people loved the band and claimed that they
would go on to become one of the biggest UK based
bands in the music scene, whilst others couldn’t
put the band down enough with people claiming the
band to be untalented and a band who just make a
noise and have no general sound or style to their
music. Their debut album 'Count Your Blessings'
got a varied and mixed reaction with many claiming
it to be an amazing debut whilst others slagged
off frontman Oliver Sykes’s “I am going
to scream until I am nearly sick” vocal styles.
The hardest times for the band came in 2007 when
a girl posted pictures on myspace of her face split
open and covered in blood, claiming that Oliver
Skyes had bottled her with a bottle of Jagermeister
on the bands tour bus and urinated all over her,
this caused major uproar and a court case was set,
luckily for Oliver Sykes his name was cleared and
the girl was branded a liar and you can see Oliver's
response to this on a track on the new album, but
more about that in a bit.
So Bring Me The Horizon took a lot of time off
to think about the past, such as their music,
how the band could of ended because of the above
incident etc and now they are back with album
number two 'Suicide Season' and you have to give
it to these guys, they have come back stronger
and heavier than ever, everything on this album
sounds so much different from the first time around,
the guitar riffs on 'Suicide Season' are proper
loud, fast and crunching, they pack a heavy punch,
the drumming is quite loud and full of force here
but has clearly been turned down a notch or two
from the previous album and as for Oliver’s
vocals for the majority of the songs on the album
his vocals are full of deep growls, but he does
change he vocal style every now and again to raspy
shouts and more hardcore punk rock Frank Carter
from the Gallows style screams.
'Suicide Season' starts off with the first single
to be taken from the album 'The Comedown', the
first time I heard the song was when I saw the
video on Scuzz TV and saw people walking around
wearing masks from the film Predator and that
was the moment that I noticed that Bring Me The
Horizon had changed, the song was very listenable
and the instrumental work seriously kicks some
arse and Oliver’s vocals come across quite
harsh sounding but the screams of "I'd Rather
Live, Than Live Forever" are the first bit
of proof that he has reworked his vocal style.
The opening vocals for 'Chelsea Smile' make me
think that Oliver Sykes has just morphed into
Frank Carter from the Gallows as the vocals sound
so similar to his at the start, but seconds later
they turn to deep growls and flow in a really
aggressive heavy way, once again the instrumental
work is outstanding, the guitar riffs are like
a thousand machine guns going off, they make a
noise and pack an almighty punch, the breakdowns
during the song are well executed and much needed
to keep things that little bit more exciting.
The lyrics and themes of Bring Me The Horizon
songs hasn’t changed here, it’s all
doom and gloom and about death and blood but I
am pretty sure you could work that out yourself
just by looking at the album title 'Suicide Season'
and also the artwork which shows a nice looking
girl holding her insides on the outside with blood
all over her, the song titles are all of a morbid
or dark theme such as 'It Was Written In Blood',
‘Death Breath', 'Sleep With One Eye Open’,
there are no happy love songs here, but what did
you expect.
The most impressive song on the album is 'The
Sadness Will Never End', the song is a technical
masterpiece, it starts off really chilled out
with such a mellow introduction but soon the noise
starts but surprisingly it sounds nothing like
the usual stuff you would hear from Bring Me The
Horizon, it’s heavy, but it’s heavy
in a melodic way, something that I thought I would
never hear from a Bring Me The Horizon song, but
then again the song does feature guest vocals
from Architects’ Sam Carter, which pretty
much self explains why the song is more of a sing
along wonder than a scream along beast!
Back to the court case situation, there is a
song on the album about the girl who took Oliver
to court, the song is called 'No Need For Introductions,
I've Read About Girls Like You On The Back Of
Toilet Doors', it starts off with a soothing piano
piece which sounds like you are in the chill out
lounge on a Sunday night and then suddenly it’s
like you have been attacked by the predator as
loud roars and screams come in with meaty guitar
riffs and then the song finishes with Oliver screaming
at the top of his voice "And after everything
you put me through, I should of fucking pissed
on you" which shows that the man is still
extremely bitter about the situation, a situation
that we will never know what really happened.
The album finishes with the title track 'Suicide
Season', a song that is an 8 minute long mid-tempo
song that is full of meaty guitar riffs and crashing
drum cymbals and overall quite an experimental
technical song full of various different soundscapes.
It’s fair to say that I have never been
a fan of Bring Me The Horizon, I never got involved
in the love and hate relationship of the band,
I will say that I was swaying more to hating the
band than I was to loving the band, but after
listening to this their second album 'Suicide
Season' I totally love the band, there is so much
to their music and they are a talented bunch of
young lads, who have done extremely well creating
an outstanding second album.
4/5
