Small Town Records have a really good roster of
bands, the first time I came across Small Town Records
was when my favourite UK punk rock band Phinius
Gage got signed by the label to release their last
album 'Seek Out Your Foes', sadly Phinius Gage are
no longer a band, but they helped me to check out
some of the other bands on Small Town Records and
they have signed a lot of talented bands such as
Penknifelovelife, Fei Comodo, Failsafe, My Awesome
Compilation and so many more, the four bands that
I have just mentioned are all on the verge of becoming
something big especially Fei Comodo and Failsafe
who are having their videos shown on the likes of
MTV2 and Kerrang TV very often and I am pretty sure
that 2009 will be the most successful year ever
for these two bands.
Other than these bands, Small Town Records have
a lot more bands on their roster that people probably
haven’t come across yet so what’s
the best way to get these bands music out to the
world? Well they have put together a 6 track 3
way split EP which features 2 tracks from 3 different
bands which are The Casino Brawl, Elias Last Day
and First Signs Of Frost, if you are into hardcore
music then you are in for a treat with this EP
as all 3 bands featured on this release are hot
sounding upcoming UK bands that you just need
to listen to.
The EP starts off with the two songs by The Casino
Brawl, the first song is 'Into The Light', the
song is vocally really aggressive but not in the
style of Bring Me The Horizons, “I can’t
understand what the fuck you are saying vocal
styles” but more in your average hardcore
band style, there are also more toned down vocals
that work side by side with the more aggressive
vocals, the guitar riffs are thick and fast sounding.
The second track 'The Regression' starts off very
toned down with really chilled out sounding drum
beats and equally toned down vocals that make
you start questioning if you are still listening
to the same band, but after about 1 minute any
doubts you had in your mind are washed away as
things turn aggressive again. The Casino Brawl
have shown a good variety of style in their music
by what they have included on this EP and it’s
enough to excite the biggest hardcore fans out
there.
The second band Elias Last Day are something
else, they hit their aggression a notch or two
above that of The Casino Brawl. The first track
'In The Red', sounds like something that the Dillinger
Escape Plan could have created, that will give
you an idea of how aggressive these guys are,
the guitar riffs have a really catchy ring to
them and the vocals are executed with big metal
growls in the style of Mortis or Cradle Of Filth.
The second track 'Sundown On Twenty Seven' is
just as aggressive as the previous track, however
the guitar riffs are a lot more technical sounding
like something Protest The Hero have been playing
for the past 4 years.
The third band First Signs Of Frost are the band
that stands out the most on the EP, they sound
a lot different than the previous two bands and
they have crammed so much into the two songs they
have included on the EP which makes them so much
better. The first track 'Through The Exterior'
has a bit of everything on offer, it has metal
style guitar riffs, it has hardcore vocals yet
it is also quite melodic, the mixture is good
and the balance is right. The second track 'Sing
Sing Ain't My Style', is a bit of a contradiction
in the title name as the vocals here are more
sing along than they are hardcore but hey we will
forgive them just this once as the song is actually
a really good listen and provides a good soft
breakaway from all the screams and shouts that
have been heard in previous songs on the EP.
This split EP from Small Town Records is a good
idea and it will get any one who buys it into
a few new bands, but with most releases like this
there is always a band you like the most who stand
out far from the rest and this time away that
has to be First Signs Of Frost, they show a lot
more variety in their music and the balance fits
well unlike that of the other bands on the EP
and to be fair the other bands on the EP are pretty
damn good as well, so anyone who forks out the
couple of quid asking price for this CD won’t
be disappointed.
