Dear Superstar are from Manchester in the UK but
you could easily be forgiven for thinking these
guys are from Finland, especially considering they
have now signed to D2 records which has a lot of
Finnish based bands on its roster and also due to
the fact that these guys have played many shows
in Finland over the past few years they have been
together.
Looking at Dear Superstar the first thing you
will notice is that they are a scene band that
are 100% about the image, they all have their
perfect looking haircuts, their bodies are slowly
getting filled up more and more with tattoos and
they really enjoy wearing metal band t-shirts
such as Bullet For My Valentine and Iron Maiden
but minus the sleeves, these guys look like true
rock stars and they also look like they are full
of confidence.
Musically I think Dear Superstar are playing
a dangerous game that if it pays off then they
could actually become superstars of the alternative
music scene but if it fails they will be back
to the drawing board thinking where to go next,
the reason why I think they are playing a dangerous
game is the fact that they have the glam rock
look that verges heavily into the emo territories
whilst exactly the same can be said about their
music, they have the glam rock sound that’s
mixed in well with this whole emo thing and I
just can’t see true glam rock fans digging
emo as you know how much controversy the scene
gets from other music fans.
The new album by Dear Superstar is called 'Heartless'
and it has 10 catchy as hell tracks that are really
easy to get into, for example, when the first
track 'Brink Of Destruction' starts off you will
find yourself admiring the catchy guitar riffs
and then Micky Satier's vocals come in and you
realise these guys sound like a more melodic version
of Atreyu, this is pretty much how the whole album
runs, it’s good but it proves to be to samey
and as unique as a red car driving past my house
every day.
All the songs on the album are easy to get into
and there are a few highlights such as 'Live Live
Lie' which features Bullet For My Valentine, the
track stands out well as Bullets unique sounding
guitar riffs are in place, the song has the trademark
Bullet For My Valentine feel about it and the
addition of Matt Tucks vocals running side by
side with Micky Satier's works well. Another big
sounding song on the album is 'Signposts To Bedposts',
the song is catchy as fuck and the guitar riffage
is pretty immense, this is sure to be a sing along
fan favourite at the bands live shows.
You can easily see what Dear Superstar are trying
to achieve with their music, they have a sound
that mixes the glam rock sound of Hanoi Rocks
with the guitar riffs Motley Crue and the vocal
skills of Atreyu with the catchiness of Aiden,
but sadly they are just borrowing things from
other bands and doing nothing new or exciting
with what they have created.
'Heartless' is an album that is well worth a
listen, it is really catchy and it is really easy
to get into, but the main downside is that what
you hear on the album you have probably already
heard many times before but if this is something
that doesn’t bother you then you will get
a lot of enjoyment out of these guys.
3.5/5
