The Sound Ex are a band that were formerly known
as The Sound Explosion, they are from Newcastle
Upon Tyne. Looking at the cover of these guys new
album 'Palomino' I thought they were going to be
a really heavy rock band especially considering
that they are signed to D2 records a label that
is now the home to bands such as Wednesday 13, Hanoi
Rocks, Wasp, Twisted Sister etc but I have never
been so wrong, instead The Sound Ex have taken their
old school influences such as The Sonics and Led
Zeppelin and have tried to create the similar style
of music into a twenty-first century style.
'Palomino' is the second album from The Sound
Ex and to be honest it is the first I have ever
heard of the band, the press release was written
like they are superstars that everyone should
know about but this really isn’t the case,
unless I have forgotten the past few years of
my life. 'Palomino' is an album that takes a lot
to get real enjoyment from, the first song 'Enchantment'
feels like it is very unfinished, the song is
very tinny sounding, now I’m not sure if
this is an effect the band were aiming for or
if they actually did run out of studio time, on
a good note the vocals are really gruff and strong
sounding but do sound slightly out of place within
this style of music, but this is where the bad
points of these guys ends as the albums grows
to become a really pleasing listen.
'Pastlife' starts of with a really good set of
instrumental work and when the vocals come in
they run nicely and become quite infectious as
Kit Endean sings "In a past life, in a past
life, in a past life, in a past life" during
the very samey sounding chorus. 'Loss' is another
song that instrumentally starts off strong and
progresses into becoming a really big sounding
song.
'Everything Will Be Fine' is as heavy as The
Sound EX get, the song is quite loud with big
guitar riffs and equally as big sounding vocals.
'Shaking Games' starts off sounding really bouncy
which is down to Euan Macfarlane's tasty bass
lines, the song then progresses into a loud catchy
number.
Each and every song on the album follows in the
same style as each other, the way a big instrumental
introduction starts things off and then the songs
progress into something bigger and louder. The
Sound EX deserve some respect as they aren’t
following trends and scenes and instead their
music easily fits into the Classic Rock category
and is also extremely good easy listening music,
the only downside is you really have to spend
a lot of time taking in their music to really
appreciate it, but once you are there you will
enjoy 'Palomino', it took some time but I really
dig this album now.
