The Stone Gods released their debut EP 'Burn The
Witch' earlier in the year, the actual EP itself
sold out copies within the first day, now some people
class this as a big achievement and others don’t
due to the fact that there weren’t that many
copies of the EP made and released, either way it’s
caused a lot of fuss and it helped bring that extra
bit of exposure for the Stone Gods, this time in
a positive way as after all when they first started
off the name The Darkness was mentioned many times
when talking about the Stone Gods but let’s
not go into that as the two are nothing alike.
I was expecting big things from the debut Stone
Gods album, after listening to and reviewing their
debut EP but I never quite expected that the album
would be as good as it actually is, the album
features 13 tracks, 2 of them which featured on
their debut 4 track EP and obviously 11 other
new songs, each and every song on the album is
really easy to get into and it features a mixture
of sounds and styles, there are fast punk rock
orientated songs, there are classic full on rocking
songs, there are slow ballad sounding songs, you
name it the Stone Gods have tried it and included
it here.
'Silver Spoons And Broken Bones' is the name
of the album and the only negative thing I have
to say about the album is that the album artwork
is a bit basic and could of done with a bit more
work, but musically it’s a masterpiece,
a masterpiece that hasn’t left my cd player
since I received the album. The album starts with
'Burn The Witch', which is the same song that
the EP of the same name started with, the song
hasn’t changed this time around, it’s
still the same sound with big guitar riffs and
Richie Edwards big sounding rock and roll vocals.
There are so many highlights on the album, but
I simply wouldn’t be able to choose a favourite
song as my mind seems to change on every listen,
I started off thinking 'Don't Drink The Water'
was my favourite song from the album when I first
heard it but my mind has changed about 50 times
since then. Talking about 'Don't Drink The Water'
the song is fast and furious and sounds like a
punk rock song with the way that it’s really
fast sounding and has that old skool punk feel
about it in the way that the guitar riffs and
bass lines are carried out and even in Richie's
fast flowing vocals, the song is extremely radio
friendly and a lot of enjoyment is to be had from
it and will be had.
The other song from the EP that is featured on
the album is 'You Brought A Knife To A Gunfight',
the song is extremely infectious and its guaranteed
that you will get sucked in by the chorus and
sing along word for word, the song is extremely
radio friendly in the way that the song is fast
and catchy, the only thing that stops this ever
being played on the radio is the odd swear word,
not like that will bother these guys.
I’m guessing the majority of people reading
this like a bit of the old skool generation of
rock music, well if you like Hanoi Rocks then
you will love 'Where You Coming From' as the song
has a really big Hanoi Rocks feel about it.
As I mentioned above, there are a few slow songs
on the album and the first one you will come across
is 'Magdalene Street', and the song is really
beautiful sounding, Richie changes his vocal style
slightly here as he sings his heart out with passion.
The second slow song on the album is 'Lazy Bones'
and it is one great rock ballad, it’s really
appealing and so easy to get into, you will not
want this song to finish and when it does you
will skip back to it for another listen or two.
Other strong moments on the album are the catchy
'Start Of Something', which will have you tapping
your foot along to the beat. The rocking 'Making
It Hard', 'Wasting Time' with its strong infectious
chorus and the huge sounding rifftastic song 'Knight
Of The Living Dead'
It’s weird, you don’t normally come
across an album where you listen to it and after
every track you are really impressed thinking
that the last track you listened to is your favourite
until the next track has finished and you think
that one is your favourite, this is the effect
'Silver Spoons And Broken Bones' gives me I love
each song equally as much but I end up getting
sucked in by one song and listen to it on repeat
for a few times then take it off repeat and then
the same effect happens with the next song etc.
Every year a good honest English rock band comes
along, last year it was Slaves To Gravity and
they are doing really well for themselves now
going from strength to strength slowly becoming
one of the best UK rock bands, and now we have
the Stone Gods who deserve to follow in the successful
footsteps of Slaves To Gravity.
