The Why Not? - Lifetime CalendarThe Why Not? - Lifetime Calendar

Lockjaw Records is a label that has a bit of a hit or miss effect, the bands on their label are either really good or are really bad, there is not normally any in between. I have just come across the new album from the labels latest signings The Why Not?, and wow I am blown away with how good the album is.

The Why Not? are a band from Bologna, they formed in 2003 and are influenced by bands such as The Ataris, The Get Up Kids, Jimmy Eat World, Foo Fighters, Funeral For A Friend and many more melodic style heavy rock bands, you can clearly spot these influences whilst listening to the bands new album 'Lifetime Calendar' it’s one hell of an explosive rock album that’s crying out to be heard.

The album starts with a short instrumental introduction with a bit of spoken word and then it suddenly kicks off into 'Lifetime Calendar', which comes at you with speeds of 100mph with the constant heavy sounding guitar riffs, big lead vocals and even bigger and more melodic backing vocals. The real fun starts with 'Drama Polaroid' the shouty vocals of "This is a comedown" really remind me of Dave Grohl from the Foo Fighters vocal style, in fact the whole song has a big Foo Fighters feeling about it, the chorus is kick arse and the more melodic feel of the song fits in well, before the song has finished you will find yourself singing "Life’s a drama, Life’s a drama" around in your head.

'Forever And A Day' follows on from the greatness of the previous song but instead of being a big rocking song, this song is an infectious slice of poppy punk, it has a really catchy Ataris style guitar riff and bouncy bass lines and overall is a big melodic sing along tune that’s so infectious you won’t be getting the words of this song out of your head in a hurry.

The next song 'Porcelain' follows on with a seriously energetic piece of drumming, the guitar riffs are fast and chunky sounding, the song also features guest vocals from Sandro Amabili, I’m not quite sure who he really is but I’m guessing he is an Italian singer, either way he is talented at what he does and helps beef the song up a bit, but as I said earlier it’s the drumming that proper kicks arse here.

The Why Not? are a band that brings the sounds of some of my favourite bands and helps use that along with their own ideas to come up with their own unique sound and it’s paid off really well here on their new album 'Lifetime Calendar', The Why Not? may have been on the scene since 2003, but this is the first the UK have ever heard of the band, well unless anyone took a holiday to Italy and managed to check them out, anyway these guys must of worked hard over the past 5 years in order to get the strong sound they have now and also pen an 13 track album that’s of such a high quality.

It’s easy to say that The Why Not? are the best band that I have ever heard come out of Italy but to be honest I haven’t really come across many Italian bands in my time, The Why Not? are a band that I think everyone needs in their life, I can’t wait for them to head to the UK for some live shows, I will definitely be first in the queue to check them out.
