Album Review
Blackmarket - The Elephant in the RoomBlackmarket - The Elephant in the Room

Blackmarket’s debut album is a little like the artwork on the cover: Inoffensive, and at times almost pleasing, but ultimately forgettable.

I really tried hard to like this album; it’s well thought out, professionally produced, the musical talent is there, and it certainly isn’t a bad album. But, there’s nothing new here, and unfortunately the band have failed to find their own unique groove.

All twelve tracks have a good upbeat tempo, to the point of becoming one-paced and samey. White Lie is the only track with a slightly different feel - downbeat and acoustic - but still quite formulaic.

Don’t get me wrong, there are some good tracks on here, and I might even listen to some again. In fact, the album improves with a second and third listen. If you can invest the time in this band, they could really grow on you, but I don’t think many people will get that far. The stand-out tracks for me are Night In Question, An Alibi Can’t Give Me a Place to Go, both of which have some fantastic riffs, and Bad Call, which is by far the least restricted track of the lot. I’ve heard a lot of good things about Sheila, but I personally think that track suffers from being even more predictable than the others.

I would imagine Blackmarket would be a good live act to see perform live, when they aren’t constrained by the tight production by which their album has been limited. The band members seem like great guys too, and they would certainly try hard to impress. So perhaps you should save your money for a ticket next time they’re in town.

You probably wouldn’t regret buying this album, but neither would you be thrilled by it. I must have listened to this album half a dozen times over the last few days, but you wouldn’t catch me humming any of the tracks. You could see that as a good thing - at least their tracks aren’t so annoyingly catchy that you can’t get them out of your head - but no band wants their songs to be so bland that they’re so instantly forgettable either.
