I Hate Kate have been creating a lot of buzz for
a long time now with people claiming that the band
are going to go on to achieve really good things
and now I tend to agree after checking out the bands
debut album 'Embrace The Curse', the album is crammed
with 12 powerful poppy punk rock tracks that you
can't help but bop along to, seriously this is poppy
punk at its best, okay, it's not up to the standards
of Blink 182 but it's not far behind and who knows
how big these guys could be once they have fully
settled in and released a few albums.
I Hate Kate are kind of a Zebrahead side project
that has turned into a full time band, basically
in 2004, vocalist Justin Mauriello was the fromer
front man of Zebrahead and at the time he went
on to form I Hate Kate as a side project as he
could show a different side of his music that
wasn't quite possible whilst he was fronting Zebrahead,
shortly after he quit Zebrahead and decided to
make I Hate Kate a full time project, fast forward
4 years and the bands debut album 'Embrace The
Curse' is finally here, you are probably wondering
what took the band so long in making their album?
I personally don't care, I am just glad the album
is here and is as good as it is.
If you don't know much about these guys then
you are probably also wondering who is Kate and
do they really hate her? Well Kate was a girlfreind
of a good friend of frontman Justin Mauriello
and pretty much everyone who knew the couple hated
her with Justin stating that she is the most evilest
person he has ever met.
'Embrace The Curse' is a great album from start
to finish, there is nothing within the album that
I can fault, people who like bands like Panic
At The Disco, Zebrahead, The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus,
Good Charlotte, The Killers and dare I say it
even My Chemical Romance will find these guys
enjoyable and will find themselves wanting to
check these guys out on the live circuit shortly
after listening to the album again and again,
seriously the teenagers are going to love I Hate
Kate and the older generation are going to enjoy
the band equally as much.
The album starts off with 'Bed Of Roses' and
the melodicness sweeps through the song from start
to finish, Justin Mauriello has a great set of
lungs, seriously, his vocals are so damn catchy,
the guitar riffs are fast and chunky and the bass
lines are bouncy as hell, the song has a bit of
The Killers feel about it, you really need to
listen to the song and you will understand straight
away, the song has been chosen as the lead single
release from the album and it's pretty easy to
see why.
'It's Always Better' starts off with some electronics
sounding like a mixture of The Killers and Zebrahead,
you are kind of left waiting for the Zebrahead
style of rap-rock vocals to come in but they never
do, instead the song just goes off on its own
melodic journey, with you listening, being taking
in on the trip repeating what Justin Mauriello
says word for word, just try and tell me this
song doesn't have you singing "It's always
better when i'm with, it's always better when
i'm with you, it's always better when i'm with
you, it's always better when i'm with you, tonight
I just don't want to say good bye to you, I don't
want to say it's over too." The more the
song goes on the more influences you can see within
the song, such as the feel of Good Charlotte back
in their 'Chronicles Of Life And Death' album
days.
I think I Hate Kate have some how come up with
the perfect sound, they have such a good style
that will appeal to a very wide generation of
people, a formula that possibly can't fail, the
album has a broad range of songs and styles and
I think that's what is going to be the winning
point for I Hate Kate, it's going to be hard for
people to not fall for their creative catchy sound.
There are some odd moments on the album but even
they turn into really melodic songs that you end
up bopping along to, check out 'Then You Kiss'
for an example of this, the song starts off really
strange but then fires off into a really catchy
random direction, sounding like something you
would hear from the self claimed gonzo band The
Vincent Black Shadow, just done in an even catchier
way. 'Inside Inside' is another one of these strange
sounding songs that ends up being really catchy
yet quite heavy at the same time, it's a song
you want to not like to start with but then something
happens and you are suddenly hooked.
The song that stands out the most to me on the
album is 'I'm In Love With a Sociopath', the song
is another song that really reminds me of The
Vincent Black Shadow and the chorus is the catchiest
on the album and will make you dance like a maniac
around your room singing along as loud as you
can looking like some mad person who has just
been let out for the day, but how much of an idiot
you look won't even cross your mind as these guys
are here to help make you enjoy yourself.
'Story I Can't Write' is a song that reminds
me of both The Killers and Underworld with the
song 'Born Slippy', it's great how one band can
remind me of so many other great bands and songs,
it's like getting enjoyment out of music and having
a refresher course of music that you really loved
to listen to a few years ago.
The album title track 'Embrace The Curse', is
a real straight forward chilled out sing along
track, it sounds a bit boy bandish but there's
something about these guys that manage to pull
the style off well.
As mentioned above I Hate Kate have the sound
that's going to appeal to a whole range of different
people, I was hooked after listening to the opening
track from the album and I am pretty sure many
other people were as well, I can't wait for these
guys to head to the UK for a full length tour,
it's going to be a blast and a big rock and roll
party in every venue that they decide to play
and tear up.
5/5
