Back in 2003, Thursday released their third album 'War All The Time' which
sold over 400,000 copies worldwide, the band did numerous tours to promote
the album and finished off the tour playing the Reading festival in August
2004, after this, the band announced they were going on a well deserved
break which then followed with rumours that the band had split up, nearly
two years later the band are back with their fourth studio album 'A City
By The Light Divided', which is an album which front man Geoff Rickly
describes as the album the band tried to make with 'War All The Time'.
I personally thought that 'War All The Time' was a good album but just
didn’t live up to the bands second album 'Full Collapse' which was
full of great songs such as 'Understanding In A Car Crash' and 'Cross
Out The Eyes'. So does 'A City By The Light Divided' live up to the bands
previous albums.
The album opens up with 'The Other Side Of The Crash/Over And Out (Of
Control)' which sets the tone for the album and sounds similar to 'Understanding
A Car Crash' from the bands Full Collapse album and also shows the band
have progressed as song writers with lyrics of "Car crash came and
car crash went, so I went along with it, because the girl you love's not
coming back, it'll never be the same".
The next track 'Counting 5-4-3-2-1' is the lead single from 'A City By
The Light Divided' and is the most commercial song Thursday have ever
done, this song will gain the band some new fans but also disappoint hardcore
Thursday fans.
'At This Velocity' is a raw, intense and angry song that have vocalist
Geoff Rickly sounding as good and raw as they did in 'Fall Collapse'.
'Arc - Lamps, Signal Flares, A Shower Of White (The Light)' is the middle
track of the album and is a great instrumental piece.
'A City By The Light Divided' does have some good mellow moments such
as on 'Running From the Rain' which starts of with a beautiful intro and
mellow vocals and 'The Lovesong Writer' is mellow song that picks up on
pace as the song goes on. Throughout most of the album the vocals are
more toned down and sing along with less screams.
Overall 'A City By The Light Divided' is different from previous Thursday
albums, the band are now older, more tighter and more experienced songwriters
Thursday fans will love this album and anyone who hears 'Counting 5-4-3-2-1'
on the radio' will most probably jump on the Thursday bandwagon. Not my
favourite Thursday album but a close second.
4/5
