Just by seeing the artwork for this album I was
pretty convinced that it was going to be an album
that I was going to enjoy, the artwork was crammed
full of dark cartoon style images with scary monsters,
freaky trees, skulls and even a halloween style
font which gave me the impressions that these guys
had a bit of a hardcore poppy punk sound about them
in the style of AFI and Tiger Army and my prediction
couldn't be more spot on, these guys sound very
much like AFI.
'Invasions Of The Mind' is the debut full length
album from energy and it is a really good album
and the first thing that you will notice, well
apart from the instrumental introduction is the
soaring vocal melodies and three-part harmonies
that come from frontman Jason Tankerley, seriously
this man has a great vocal style and it's what
make their songs so accessible. The second thing
you will notice about the album is that the album
is over in no time, well actually the song is
just over 27 minutes in length but it is over
before you know it mainly due to the pace that
these guys play they are extremely fast and energetic
and their name says it all.
The album starts off with a 1 minutes 40 second
intsrumental introduction that sounds a bit buzzy
and builds up in sound over time, with the guitar
riffs getting louder and louder untill everything
comes to a halt and the band blast into the second
track 'Hunter Red', the song is played at some
speed and it's the first chance you get to see
how good Jason Tankerley's vocals are, seriously
this man is a vocal genius, his vocals are extremely
melodic and the best bit about them are the multi-layered
harmonies.
'The Silence' is the opposite of the what the
song suggests, it starts off with raw hardcore
vocals but then runs off into melodic territories,
with the raw and melodic vocals swapping over
the longer the song progresses, the guitar solo
halfway through the song is pretty outstanding
and there are a set of Iron Maiden style "woah,
woah" vocals that come in towards the end,
overall the song runs well and proves to be a
song that you can easily get into.
'Heaven' has to be the shortest song that I have
ever come across' the song runs for just 28 seconds
and actually ends up being quite a good listen,
it's quite catchy, the only downside is when you
start to fully get into the song it has about
a second left to run and then finishes.
The way '400' is layered is great, the song starts
off how you would expect being a fast sing along
affair sounding not too far away from anything
you have previously heard from AFI and this is
how the song runs for about 2 minutes, but it's
the middle to later part of the song where things
change, once again the Iron Maiden style "woah,
woah" style vocals come in and the song turns
into a full on instrumental assault apart from
these "woah, woah" vocals styles popping
up every now and again, then suddenly the song
changes again with really mellow guitar riffs
which run right into the next song 'Contact',
in fact you don't even notice that the next track
has started unless you look at the track number
on your cd player, these guys certainly get you
gripped in.
I am really impressed by Energy, they sound slightly
like AFI but have brought their own unique feel
into the mix, their debut album 'Invasions Of
The Mind' is really easy to get into and I think
it's only a matter of time before people really
pick up on how good these guys are. You will find
yourself listening to the album again and again
and getting different enjoyment from it each time.
4/5
