Souls are a 4 piece band from Bristol and they are
the latest band to become signed to Lockjaw Records,
a label that seems to release hundreds of albums
every year with most releases being of an average
to high quality. The best way to describe the sound
of Souls is Nirvana meets the Zico Chain mixed with
Queens Of The Stone Age, their music has that big
grunge feel about it and at the same time it’s
quite experimental and industrial sounding in places.
The band released their debut album 'Gold Dust'
back in April 2006 and now two years on they are
back to release their second album 'Simple Terms
And Conditions' and to be fair the album has pretty
much the same feel as the bands debut album had
but this time, you can see that their constant
touring and the length of time that they have
been together has really helped them come up with
a tight sound that’s hard to knock.
As soon as the album kicks off with 'Demise'
you start to think that your ears are playing
tricks with you and that another lost Kurt Cobain
or Nirvana track has been released as Dean Bryants
opening vocals sound all so similar to those that
we have been listening to from Kurt Cobain over
the years, the whole song has a really dark grunge
feel running through it, the song becomes extremely
melodic during the chorus which is really where
I can see the Zico Chain in this band as the Zico
Chain totally nailed the grunge scene last year
when they released their debut album 'Food' which
was crammed full of extremely melodic grunge rock
songs.
'Thought Machine' starts off with some big guitar
riffs and equally loud drumming with frontman
Dean Bryants vocals coming in seconds later, the
song has a much darker feel about it and the melodicness
is clearly left at the back in the recording studio
as these guys just rock out here in a loud style.
Whilst listening through the album track by track
it seems like Souls are all about the dark grunge
rock scene with big dirty guitar riffs and really
raw attitude filled vocals and this is the case
for the majority of the album but it’s when
you get to track 5 'Infiltrate' everything becomes
toned down, granted the over all feel of the song
is dark but the vocals are really chilled out
and the guitar riffs feel a lot more technical
and quieter than on any other song during the
album.
The second album by Souls is a pleasing listen,
there’s not many bands around at the moment
playing grunge so it’s good to see an up
and coming band bringing something to the grunge
scene, the album is totally worth checking out
but I can’t see Souls becoming your favourite
new band in a hurry but at the same time you will
totally enjoy what Souls have to offer on 'Simple
Terms And Conditions'.
3/5
