Punk rock has always been the music scene for me,
I have enjoyed watching many bands come and go throughout
the scene and have managed to see Guns On The Roof
a few times on my travels of watching some of the
best UK punk bands rip up the toilet sized venues
of the UK circuit and I have to say that Guns On
The Roof proved to be a great support band each
and every time that I have seen them support bands.
The first time I got hold of a Guns On The Roof
recording was a few months ago when I reviewed their
'Last Orders' EP which was basically a stop gap
release to help give the band that extra bit of
exposure as they were busy finishing off their new
album 'New Frustration' which two of the three EP
tracks now appear on the soon to be released new
album 'New Frustration'.
Guns On The Roof are hidden proof that their
are so many gems in the UK punk rock scene, there
are so many bands who should be massive and could
quite easily give some of the big American punk
rock bands a run for their money, but the sad
thing is the UK punk rock scene has always been
quite underground and if you form a band and get
involved in the scene then you are digging yourself
an early grave, that’s sadly how it’s
always been, but the good thing is that the bands
in the scene are totally dedicated to the music
they listen to and play, they are true punks and
don’t give a fuck about how much the music
industry wants to and can screw the scene over.
If they did care and just wanted quick fame then
they would grow floppy fringes, wear spray on
jeans and join become a scenester in the emo scene
where it seems that if you have the right image
then you have a fast track ticket to success even
if your musical skills are shit, seriously look
at some of the bands out there who are becoming
huge when their music all sounds the same and
is far below average sounding, just check out
You Me At Six for a true example of this.
Anyway, rant over, back to Guns On The Roof,
the new album 'New Frustration' is due to be released
on the 6th October and if you are well into your
punk music then seriously put this date into your
diary as Guns On The Roof have come up with a
winning album here, it’s got punk written
all over it, it’s rammed with 14 fast punk
rock songs that are seriously filled with attitude.
The album starts off with 'Last Orders' the title
track from the EP that the band released only
a couple of months ago, the song hasn’t
changed since when it was first released and is
still the fast paced punk rock song that I wrote
about not so long ago, the song sets the pace
for the album and everything ongoing follows on
in such an enjoyable fashion. 'Last Orders' is
the closest that a song by a UK punk band is going
to get to sounding like Rancid as the song sounds
so much like them but with a much more catchier
edge.
'Dying' opens with guitars blazing really fast,
Liam Brets vocals soon come in with "Same
old shit, just a different day" in quite
a chilled out approach and then suddenly the song
turns really melodic with the vocals having that
really catchy edge. This is the kind of punk rock
I love, the instrumental work has to be big and
fast and the vocals need to be filled with attitude
but also have a bit of catchy feel about them
every now and again but not in the Mcfly style
manufactured vocals and to be fair Guns On The
Roof pull this off really well.
'Last Night' is another really fast paced song
from start to finish, Liam's vocals come across
with a bit more attitude in places and sound as
good as ever during the pure catchy chorus, the
guitar work is spot on with really fast spurts
of riffing coming and going every 30 seconds which
sounds like it’s building up to a fist in
the air, chant a long moment which sadly never
comes.
The closest you are going to get to the album
title track is 'Frustration', it’s nearly
there, it’s just missing the new, maybe
this type of frustration has been on their mind
for too long and isn’t new, anyway the song
is really fast and Liam's vocals are as fast as
ever here, he does a good job and 'Frustration'
could quite easily be the most outstanding song
on the album but it’s quite a hard decision
to call when there are so many great moments on
offer and I feel that the extremely radio friendly
'Punk Sweat And Tears' is right up there with
'Frustration' and could quite easily be the best
song on the album, but it’s all down to
a matter of opinion and at the moment I can’t
make a choice as I love both songs for different
reasons.
If you like punk rock style big guitar riffs
then you are in for a treat when you get to track
8 'Wake Up', the song starts off with some really
chunky riffs and they pretty much come and go
throughout the whole song. If you like fast aggressive
straight to the point punk songs then 'Freedom'
will be the song for you, it’s fast and
furious from start to finish and Liam's vocals
sound so similar to those of Acey Slade during
his Trashlight Vision days and if you like acoustic
music then you will be pleased to know that 'Yours
Sincerely' is a full on acoustic track with Liam
singing along, the song reminds me of the Matt
Skiba and Kevin Seconds split solo album but that’s
only because the song is acoustic and everything
else is stripped away from the music so much like
their spilt solo album.
'On The Brink' is a huge song, it’s a really
pleasing listen, the introduction to the song
reminds me so much of the introduction to 'Love
Gun' by Kiss, seriously play both songs at the
same time and you will realise just how similar
it is and also get double the pleaser at the same
time, just don’t tell Gene Simmons as you
know how he likes to get the Kiss logo on pretty
much everything that has ever been made, anyway
the song has a really old skool feel about it
and proves to be another highlight of the album.
Guns On The Roof are such an enjoyable band,
they are four lads doing what they love and making
punk rock music for the rest of the world to listen
to, 'New Frustration' is one of the best punk
albums that I have heard in a long time and I
feel that Guns On The Roof should be extremely
proud of what they have achieved, if the band
were from America and released 'New Frustration'
then they would probably be busy having the time
of their lives touring the world over, sadly for
them they are from the UK where the major labels
and music magazines only care about a select few
bands and if your features don’t match their
check list then you have no chance of major success,
nevertheless, Guns On The Roof are enjoying what
they do and they do what they do extremely well
and will continue to tour their arses off with
some of the best bands in the scene.
I love Guns On The Roof and you should too.
5/5
