Album Review
Everest - Ghost NotesEverest - Ghost Notes

I have never come across Everest until their album came through my door a couple of days ago, I have since gone on and found out that the band are a four piece band from L.A in America and that they are signed to Vapor Records who have just gone on to release their debut album 'Ghost Notes', now Everest aren’t your typical rock band, for a start they don’t look emo and are not associated with the emo scene in anyway unlike most new bands who take the easy ride to success by becoming the new scene band on the block, Everest aren’t heavy either instead they have an easy listening soft rock sound, a sound that I like but feel they are going to have a long hard ride to break into the UK music scene with.

Pretty much the whole of the debut album by Everest is acoustic or really stripped down rock music, the album starts off in an acoustic way with 'Rebels In The Roses' with acoustic guitars being strummed and the odd keyboard lines being played, frontman Russell Pollards vocals are really soft and gentle sounding throughout the song and fits in well with the overall music of the band, the guitar solos during the song are big and breathtaking and clearly shows how talented Everest are as musicians and also prove you don’t have to play loud and fast to rock out.

One of the most pleasing tracks on the album is 'Trees', the song starts out with Russell Pollards soft soothing vocals singing "Baby I am under your spell, you changed my world tonight, Baby I am under your spell you made me come alive I need time to make this right", the vocals are really what makes the song they are so clear and easy listening and you can tell that Pollard’s enjoying every moment of it, the only instrumental work running through the song is an ever so stripped down acoustic guitar line and really tinny sounding drumming.

Things start off a bit different with 'Into Your Soft Heart', instead of the acoustic guitar starting things off, the drumming takes centre stage here and once again the song runs off into another chilled out rock song where Pollards vocals once again sound as good as ever.

Everest are a band who mixes soft rock with country and folk music and they do it so well, the whole 11 tracks on their debut album are really stripped down songs but before you start to expect this to be an album full of ballads or depressing music, this totally isn’t the case, the band remind me slightly of UK soft rock band No Machine and ever so slightly of The Hold Steady, mainly due to the dad soft rock pub band feel that both The Hold Steady and Everest have. The main highlight of the album is Russell Pollards vocals as they are what makes the songs feel good, his vocals fit in really well with the music and it’s quite an enjoyable experience to listen to and take in his lyrics and follow the stories he’s singing about.

I know Everest aren’t going to appeal to every one but I feel that the band need to be checked out as there is a lot to get out of their debut album offering, seriously just check out the song 'Relouder' and you will realise that Everest may be really soft sounding but they are also so easy to get into and can come up with a catchy song that you will want to come back to time and time again.

As I said above I can’t really see Everest getting that far in the UK music scene at the moment, but the ball is now rolling as My Morning Jacket have picked Everest to open up and support them on their upcoming UK tour which can only mean good things for Everest.

Head to your local shop and pick up a copy of 'Ghost Notes' and go for a long road trip whilst listening to the soulful tunes that are on offer as Everest provide the perfect driving songs especially for a long road trip.
