I first come across Dorp with their 'Simon Says'
single and it would be an understatement for me
to say that I wasn’t really impressed with
the song, in fact I thought the song was pretty
shit and couldn’t quite understand why they
bundled 5 remixes of the song with the single, the
main version of the song was bad enough so it’s
not like I wanted to punish myself for a further
25 minutes listening to remixes of a song I didn’t
like.
Over the past couple of months fellow Alternative
Vision reviewer Thom has taken on the duties of
reviewing the new material from Dorp and he seems
to love the band, giving both their last single
'Rollercoaster' and their debut album 'Humans
Being' really good ratings, now I was quite shocked
on how two peoples views and opinions on a band
could be so different especially when we are both
quite open minded when it comes to music, well
I have since figured out how our opinions were
quite different, yeah we’re being the magical
word there as from listening to the new double
a side release from Dorp which consists of 'Pigs
Do Fly' and 'Cops And Robbers' I have realised
that Dorp have improved majorly and are nothing
like the band that released 'Simon Says' all those
months ago.
'Pigs Do Fly' is a straight in your face catchy
radio friendly number, it’s so upbeat and
cheery that it might leave you breaking out into
the funky monkey dance, seriously this song could
make even the most miserable lazy fuckers get
up and dance, well yeah even more so that what
happy pills would do anyway, the song may be a
big old catchy number but Dorp have also managed
to include some Nine Inch Nails style soundscapes
in to give the song a bit of an experimental industrial
feel.
'Cops And Robbers' is a much darker song than
'Pigs Do Fly' and reminds me slightly of Placebo,
if you are wondering who Placebo are, they were
big once but lost their touch many years ago,
anyway back to 'Cops And Robbers' there’s
something about it that’s so enjoyable and
I think it’s the fact that it’s so
dark and features big pounding drums and beefy
guitar riffs with the odd bit of electronics thrown
in for good measures, but let’s be honest
who isn’t using electronics in their music
these days, the only downside of the song is that
the lyrics are really cheesy but if you don’t
think to hard about the song you won’t notice
it.
Dorp have certainly improved since I first come
across them, infact I am really loving the band
at the moment and am considering going out and
buying their debut album 'Humans Being', even
though I had the album just weeks ago before I
handed it over to Thom to review, good move for
him bad move for me.
4/5
