Bit of pointless information for you here, type
The Chemists into your favourite search engine such
as google and what do you get, a lot of links for
Boots and all the other big chemists in the country,
maybe google haven’t picked up the fact that
there is a band out there named The Chemists, I
will forgive them for this just this once as to
be honest I have only just come across The Chemists
as well, and I am quite glad that I have come across
this band, The Chemists state that they are influenced
by Queens Of The Stone Age, The Pixies and The Police,
I can slightly see the Queens OF The Stone Age influence
within their music, but in all honesty they are
nothing like their so called influences and are
a pure rocking alternative band.
If you are wondering how the band got their name
and think they have an obsession for chemists
or think that the band members worked in a chemist
once then you are close to the truth, the band
got their name from the fact that they once all
lived above a chemist in their local high street,
which also ended up being the location where they
would rehearse. The band are releasing a double
a side single in the middle of September in the
form of 'Something For The Weekend' and 'Tazmanian
Devil'.
'Something For The Weekend', is the more radio
friendly track and 'Tazmanian Devil' is the more
all out rocking number. Frontman Johnny Benn has
really appealing vocals that really bring you
in to like their songs. 'Something For The Weekend'
has some great guitar riffs running throughout,
the drumming is thick fast and constant in places
keeping everything rocking and Johnny Benn's vocals
giving the song a really radio friendly melodic
edge.
The rocking introduction of 'Tazmanian Devil'
is pretty outstanding, it’s big, it’s
fun and it’s damn catchy, Johnny Benn's
vocals take on a darker edge for this song but
still remain quite melodic during the chorus,
the guitar riffs are thick and come quite often,
the bass line is bouncy and once again the drumming
is quite big and constant with a 10 second drum
solo kicking in just after the 2 minute 5 second
mark, the further the song goes on the more constant
the drumming becomes sounding like a big marching
band.
The Chemists are great, they are a straight up
rock band, they don’t need to be put into
all these sub genres and categories that have
been cropping up over the past 5 years, they are
just a pure alternative rock and roll band simple
as.
4/5
