Raw rock and roll drizzled with punk; a group of angry kids who listen
to Nirvana too much and formed a band. But that said, if they played in
a pub near me, I'd go and see them, and drag my friends along too. If
“All Work No Play” is anything to go by, I bloody love Supenik.
At first listening, you'd think Supenik are good fun and the energy
levels are incredible, but the songs seem a little simply put together.
And then all of a sudden, as if out of nowhere, the riff-generator gets
turned up to 11.001 and your CD player bleeds brilliance. Oh please have
my babies. I want them to be rock Gods like you.
Imagine the Zico Chain crossed with the Black Velvets, and with a synth
subtly fuzzing away in the background, and you have Supenik.
Virtually every song blows my socks off. And if I wasn't wearing socks,
my feet would explode for sure. However, there are eighteen tracks to
get through, which seems a little excessive. This could have been
refined down to the best album of the year, instead of an album that
goes on a bit but happens to include a fistful of great tunes. But then
again on the other side of the coin, it does make them one of the few
new bands who have made an album that lasts over an hour.
Naming the best songs on the album isn't a quick task; as besides the
first track, “Firebreathin',” “Bob,” “Giddy Up” and “Hold On” are real
killers, and there are many more just inches away from similar greatness.
Please go and listen to Supenik. Pretty please in fact. You won't regret it.
4.5/5
