Starting with “Circus of the Mad,” this
is Infadels latest offering to the music scene after
their debut album “We Are Not The Infadels,”
which I won't lie, I bloody enjoyed. By the sounds
of things, they've still got it, hoorah. This opening
track is not only a fantastic song in its own right,
but also a brilliant start to an album. I think
a lot of Infadels appeal comes from their ability
to produce these incredibly funky riffs and rhythms.
On the previous album, tracks like “Topboy”
and “Love Like Semtex” were relying
on the guitars and bass, but in this song off of
the new record, vocal harmonies actually provide
the main melody. I like it.
And then the song is followed by one of my favourite
Infadels tracks, which was also released as a
single- “Make Mistakes.” When I saw
them earlier in the year before this release,
they played a couple of new songs and this was
the one that stood out. It's just incredible.
Energetic excellence that makes me wish I was
back at Glastonbury, jumping around like a nutter
as they turn out to be one of the best bands of
the weekend. It's just impossible to tire of these
guys, they've got it just right.
“Play Blind” starts off a bit slower.
What's this all about? Have they... Wham blam!
No, they haven't. Twenty-five seconds in and the
track explodes into high octane fantasticism.
And “Free Things For Poor People,”
is a bit slower too. I believe this has been released
as a single also. It's not as promising as the
other singles, but in all fairness that would
be a tall order. But don't be put off, “Code
1” will restore all your faith in Infadels
ability to rock your socks. You can safety consider
your socks considerably rocked. A pulsing synth
line in the background forms the underscore to
one of the most upbeat songs on the album. The
title song to the album is another stand out track,
“Universe in Reverse,” with a synth-brass
lead line that oozes funk. It might not quite
as energetic as other songs, but it's impossible
to sit still to, and that deems it a success in
my books.
To sum up the album, and indeed Infadels; they're
a really exciting group. Now proven to deliver
hard-hitting energetic music that is great fun
to watch and listen to. They've got some real
skill and can guarentee to move your feet with
the funky synth and bass lines, but don't go thinking
they're a dance band. Electro/Indie/Rock would
be my classification, although with the emphasis
on the latter genres rather than electro. Regardless,
check them out when they return to the UK. Awesome.
5/5
