Dead Letter Office are the latest young band who
are setting their sights on the mainstream music
scene and it seems like the band are on the right
track but at the same time have a long journey with
their double a side single release 'Chairkickers'
and 'Comeback Kid'.
The first song 'Chairkickers' is quite catchy
and poppy, it has a bit of an electronic edge
that helps make the song stand out, frontman Benjamin
Hiorns vocals are loud and clear but they don’t
really have that unique sound that the majority
of mainstream indie bands do these days, Everyone
knows a Kaiser Chiefs, Oasis, Razorlight, Scouting
For Girls song as soon as they hear a couple of
seconds of the vocals but sadly Benjamin Hiorns
vocals aren’t going to help you to recognize
a Dead Letter Office song in a hurry which could
become a problem for the band as they try and
head off into the mainstream, the infectious shouts
of "Chairkickers" is the main vocal
highlight of the song but it’s not likely
to be lodged in your head for you to chant along
for days to come.
'Comeback Kid' takes a slightly different route
from the main single release and has a much darker
feel, the guitars have a stop and start feel about
them with some good fierce guitar riffs in place,
there is some really impressive jamming as well
which builds up, and the vocals are loud and clear
again but there is no melody or nothing that really
makes this song stand out from other songs in
the indie music scene,
I can see what Dead Letter Office are trying
to achieve they have gone for an experimental
style of indie music but I just don’t think
they have come up with any killer songs just yet
'Chairkickers' is the best out of the double a
side single release but I don’t think it
has top 40 hit written over it and I certainly
don’t think it’s going to bring the
band into the mainstream just yet. Its time for
Dead Letter Office to go back to the drawing board
and come up with those killer songs they need
to progress.
