The music scene seriously needs more bands like
Late Of The Pier around, the band are randomly great,
they mix electronic, pop and indie music together
and have come up with some futuristic spaced out
trippy sound that’s set new boundaries for
the nu-rave sound that the Klaxons have happily
dominated, well until now as Late Of The Pier are
one of the most unique British bands around at the
moment, yeah they do owe a bit to the Klaxons even
though they really are so much different from the
Klaxons, but if the Klaxons were never around and
never released their debut album 'Myths Of The Near
Future' then I doubt Late Of The Pier would be the
band they are today or may not be a band full stop.
The two singles that Late Of The Pier have released
in recent months have been pretty outstanding,
the first single release I managed to listen to
was 'The Bears Are Coming', the song had instant
appeal starting off with some tribal style sound
that then turned into some mental electronic tribal
sound with really deep rumbling bass lines, the
other single is the bands current single 'Heartbeat'
which is quite fast and fun, the song is so trippy
and so listenable it’s like your fucked
and your ears are playing games with you.
Their debut album 'Fantasy Black Channel' is
being released on the 11th August and luckily
it features the four singles they have released,
'Space And The Woods', 'Focker', 'Bathroom Gurgle',
'The Bears Are Coming' and 'Heartbeat' and another
7 outstanding tracks. The album opens in a huge
fashion with 'Hot Tent Blues' the song has a big
stadium rock style feel about it with big guitar
riffs and enough electronics to rattle the windows
in your house, and without you even knowing the
songs moved straight into the next track 'Broken'
which happens to be one of the strongest tracks
on the album, the electronic synths and beats
running throughout the song are strong and impressive
and frontman Samuel Dust's vocals are as loud
clear as I have ever heard in a Late Of The Pier
song, 'Broken' is without a doubt the least trippy-ist
sounding song of the album but saying that it
does go off track towards the end and fires into
a flurry of futuristic sounds and scratchy sounds
like your cd is skipping at a fast pace.
I happened to miss the bands first single 'Space
And The Woods' first time around, and I have now
realised that I have missed a total gem for months
as the song is simply great, it’s so fast
the synths are rapid and so enjoyable, the drumming
is constant and battles along nicely with the
synth nature of the song, turn this song up to
full volume and enjoy but watch for the falling
objects in your room as the song rattles the hell
out of your room. As soon as 'Space And The Woods'
finishes you are taken on a tribal journey for
one of the bands other single releases 'The Bears
Are Coming', what a double whammy, things don’t
come this good often.
After the tribal journey of 'The Bears Are Coming',
you are taken on some mad psychedelic journey
for 'Random Firl', now this is one fun song, as
soon as this finishes you are treated to the bands
current single 'Heartbeat'. It’s not often
that you listen to an album where each song sounds
so much different from the last but is equally
as good but this is the case with 'Fantasy Black
Channel'.
'Fantasy Black Channel' is a totally unique album,
it’s quite daring and unlike any other album
that I have listened to in the past, it’s
got the feel of a greatest hits album for two
reasons, the first reason is that every single
song on the album is good and secondly every song
sounds so different from the last which is pretty
much the feel a greatest hits album has due to
songs from a number of different albums being
bundled onto one. It’s only a matter of
time before people catch on and try form a band
like Late Of The Pier as they have simply set
a new barrier for English music.
I am quite excited to see what the future holds
for Late Of The Pier and how they go about following
up such a perfect album when the time is right,
in the meantime 'Fantasy Black Channel' will be
spinning in my cd player for months to come.
5/5
