Most people including myself got into The Automatic
through their ever so catchy single 'Monster', the
track seemed to never leave the charts and it seemed
like every DJ across the country had the song on
loop as it didn’t matter what radio station
or music television channel you put on there would
be 'Monster' blasting out of your speakers now this
was a good thing to start with but after hearing
the song constantly for a couple of months the song
started to get to me and it seemed like the radio
had killed another classic song by doing what they
do best and that’s over playing it, The Automatic
then went on to release their debut album 'Not Accepted
Anywhere' which went down a storm and came out with
a lot of positive press, the only bad thing to happen
from the album release was that The Automatic went
on to release five singles and two of the five singles
happened to be re-releases which seemed like a bit
of a cash in releasing the songs again after the
band had found major success, but then again this
was more down to the record label than the actual
band.
It’s been a good sixteen months since The
Automatic last released anything in the UK a lot
of changes have happened within the band, first
of all one of the bands founding members keyboardist
Alex Pennie has left the band to pursue in other
projects and in his replacement the band have
taken on former Yourcodenameis:milo frontman Paul
Mullen, however Paul Mullen isn’t a direct
replacement for Alex Pennie as Mullen has taken
on duties as the bands rhythm guitarist, with
the band claiming that all four band members will
split the synths and keyboard duties which is
quite a brave move. The band have also been busy
working on their second album which has now been
titled 'This Is A Fix' and is due for release
towards the end of August, the first single to
be taken from the album is 'Steve McQueen' and
what a tune it is.
Not only is 'Steve McQueen', the first single
to be taken from the bands forthcoming second
album 'This Is A Fix', is also the first track
to be released to feature the all new Automatic
line up. Forget 'Monster', forget 'Recover', forget
the poppy hooks, infact forget anything that you
may have heard from The Automatic before as 'Steve
McQueen' is nothing like the bands previous material,
it’s more mature and certainly a lot heavier.
The guitar work during 'Steve McQueen' is the
most heaviest and crunching guitar work that has
been featured in an Automatic song to date, the
drumming is a lot bigger and chunkier sounding
to previous material to and frontman Rob Hawkins
vocals are a lot clearer, louder and more mature
than ever before.
This is the rebirth of The Automatic, this is
the new louder, heavier, chunkier, more mature
band, it’s going to be an interesting year
for The Automatic and I can’t wait to see
what their new album 'This Is A Fix' sounds like
and also to see how people take to their new sound.
5/5
