The debut album from Scars On Broadway has been
long coming, the band have been really hyped up
over the past couple of months and it’s pretty
easy to see why just by listening to a couple of
tracks from their self titled debut album as the
album is outstanding. If you haven’t heard
of Scars On Broadway then you seriously must of
been living under a rock for the last couple of
months or been locked away in a padded room for
too long. The band is the new project from System
Of A Down members Daron Malakian and John Dolmayan
with Franky Perez, Danny Shamoun and Dominic Cifarelli
making up the rest of the band. Now you wonder how
are the System Of A Down members going to follow
up the success they enjoyed with 5 straight platinum
albums with System Of A Down with their new band
Scars Of Broadway, well it’s quite simple,
listen to the Scars On Broadway album and you will
notice that the band are pretty much like System
Of A Down but with the main songwriter Daron Malakian
doing all the singing with Serj Tankian nowhere
in sight which makes you notice and realise that
Daron Malakian is the strongest and most talented
member of System Of A Down.
The debut album from Scares On Broadway is a
15 track masterpiece, it runs for just over 45
minutes and is crammed with goodness, It’s
pretty aggressive and features a lot of electronic
sounds which welcomed a lot. The album starts
with 'Serious' and the song is extremely infectious,
if this song was played for the first time in
a packed out rock club you can guarantee that
whole room would be going nuts as the song is
so easy to get into.
Each track on the album offers something different,
there are some that sound like System Of A Down,
some that sound quite punky, some that’s
crammed full of electronics and some that just
have that Daron Malakian random feel about them
such as 'Chemicals' the song so random and so
enjoyable it has a completely crazy feel about
it, from Daron's time of writing the lyrics for
System Of A Down we know that the man is a talented
song writer, he can write serious lyrics, he can
write random lyrics and he can write some damn
right fucked up lyrics and this is the case with
Daron singing "come eat some chemicals with
me, come east some chemicals with me" in
a repetitive fashion and then he goes off in a
more melodic way singing "MADNESS! No one
cares, Looking around and nobody there, when I
say, "Fuck the world!" As we're ready
to rock, Piss on your face while you suck on my
cock", now it’s not every day you get
a big rock star singing about pissing on your
face is it? But because its Daron Malakian it's
actually taken in quite a humorous way.
If you want to hear Scars On Broadway at their
electronic best then listen to 'Enemy', the electronic
introduction is such a good thing to listen to,
the song does branch away from the electronics
midway but the introduction is such a good example
of how electronics should be including in rock
music, once again the lyrics are crazy and this
time drug related with Daron singing "we’re
on drugs, we’re all on drugs, we’re
on drugs, we’re on drugs, baby we’re
all on drugs, do you like drugs".
The song that sounds the most like a system Of
A Down song has to be 'Stoner Hate', it has that
fast paced System Of A Down feel like they had
on their older material such as 'Bounce', the
song is extremely fast with Daron singing about
California being invaded by a hippie psychopath,
which adds to the never ending list of random
lyrics.
It is pretty pointless me writing about every
song on the album as the quicker you stop reading
this review and get out and buy the album the
better it will be for you as I simply can’t
find a fault within the album as everything about
it is damn right brilliant and I believe that
everybody should experience the greatness that
Scars On Broadway have to offer in their debut
album.
The variety of sounds and songs on the album
is what keeps it fresh and fun, it’s the
kind of album that you won’t be getting
bored of in a hurry, each and every time you listen
to the album something else will come to your
attention and your favourite track will change
so many times before you finally settle on your
overall favourite track. Scars On Broadway is
currently my favourite album that has been released
so far this year which is some achievement considering
the high quality of albums that have been released
from some great bands recently including my personal
favourite band in the world Alkaline Trio who
released their sixth studio album at the start
of July, it will be interesting to see if the
debut Scars On Broadway album will top my list
of top albums 2008 when the years out especially
considering that both Slipknot and Metallica have
new highly anticipated album releases just around
the corner, watch this space.
