Dolium - El Vampiro Attack!Dolium - El Vampiro Attack!

Ever since The Horrors came on the scene in 2005 their have been a massive flutter of bands attempting to create the same style of music as The Horrors, now a few bands have managed to do this well and totally kick The Horrors arse sound wise as to be fair, The Horrors might of been one of the first bands to create this random gothic garage punk sound but by no means does that mean they had killer songs because that’s what The Horrors lacked, on paper their music sounds a good idea but on record it was lacking and quite simply boring, now it makes you wonder why Dolium have gone for the same style of sound especially when their poor attempt makes The Horrors sound like kings of the music genre.

Don’t get me wrong, Dolium aren’t all bad they have some great song titles on their 'El Vampiro Attack!' EP such as 'You've Got Holes!', '(She Can't) Stake My Heart', 'Oh Lord, I See No Reflection' and the best named track 'Coughin' In The Coffin', but the sad thing is the music really doesn’t back up the song titles, it’s all good that they have well thought about song titles but they mean absolutely nothing and are going to get no where when they are not backed up with good music.

Take the first track off the EP for example, it’s called 'You've Got Holes!' sounds like some dark gothic vampire title and yeah musically it is quite a dark offering but it’s frontman Reece Adamo's vocals which are completely drowny and quite unlistenable after a few minutes and the only thing that really does stand out is the drumming which is quite fast and constant sounding spot on.

'(She Can't) Stake My Heart', slightly has more going for it, the vocals are more accessible, they are quite repetitive but in a good way with Reece Adamo singing 'She Can't Stake My Heart' over and over again, the guitars and drumming give the song a hectic assault of punk rock in such a noisy way. The other two songs on the EP don’t get any better to be honest.

There are some intrusting moments on 'El Vampiro Attack!' such as the awesome frantic drumming and the punk rock edge the band have brought to their sound but this isn’t enough to warrant buying the EP, I am pretty sure that this EP won’t be spinning around in my cd player again anytime soon.

2/5
