Fellow Alternative Vision reviewer Thom, reviewed
the debut Fei Comodo 4 track EP 'This One's For
Us' back in early 2006, the review was pretty average.
Well Fei Comodo are now back with a new EP, this
time an 8 track EP called 'They All Have Two Faces'
and it seems like the band have listened to the
good and bad that people have been saying about
their band over the years and come back stronger
than ever. For a start look at the artwork for the
new and old EP, and you will see a major difference,
this time around the band have gone for proper detailed
artwork of two people running away from burning
buildings whilst wearing gasmasks, looking like
something you would expect to see on the front of
a Fightstar cd.
When you put 'They All Have Two Faces' into your
cd player and press play you pretty much instantly
know that you are in for a good time, now this
is partly down to the fact that Fei Comodo have
had a hectic touring schedule ever since their
debut EP 'This One's For Us' was released, clocking
in shows alongside Parkway Drive, Enter Shikari,
Devil Sold His Soul, Fightstar, InMe and many
other heavyweight bands in the hardcore/screamo
scene. You can clearly tell that Fei Comodo have
been influenced by some of the bands they have
been busy touring with over the years as well
as Canadian screamo crew Protest The Hero.
A short instrumental track called 'The Rest Will
Follow' opens up 'They All Have Two Faces', and
it’s quite true the rest does follow for
the next 25 minutes verging on excellence. After
the short instrumental introduction Marc Halls
shouty vocals come in for the start of 'Break
The Ice', along with a bouncy bass sound, and
big technical sounding guitar riffs, the vocals
then turn to a more sing a long style before reverting
back to sounding more rawer sounding screams,
there are some huge breakdowns throughout the
song and everything seems to fit in perfectly.
'Cost Of Living' has a big guitar driven introduction,
the overall sound has a Protest The Hero style
feel about it with frontman Marc Halls vocals
sounding so similar to those of Protest the Hero
frontman Roddy Walker, the crunching guitar riffs
are also in the same league as those from Protest
The Hero, and both bands share a mixed sound that’s
one minute heavy and raw sounding and the next
minute quite melodic with sing a long moments,
this is Fei Comodo at their best and it’s
clear to see why the band are now fastly becoming
one of the most hyped up bands on the UK hardcore
scene.
Fei Comodo really like their short instrumental
tracks, seriously check out 'Leave Nothing Behind'
the track runs for just over a minute and has
such a soothing chilled sound that gives you a
slight break from the heavy sound that Fei Comodo
have mastered. Just as 'Leave Nothing Behind'
finishes, Marc Halls pretty much screams his lungs
out as 'Just Another Day' kicks in, the song is
another huge sounding track and one of the more
heavier tracks on the album, that reaches a slight
sing along peak for the chorus, the changing in
vocal styles throughout 'Just Another Day' really
does give the song that special feeling.
The album finishes with 'Behind Bars' and it
starts off with such a fast sing along feeling
with Marc's vocals sounding more melodic and clearer
than ever, once again the guitar riffs are as
big and meaty as ever, the song is extremely fast
moving and has such a lot to offer, the track
is a perfect finish from an extremely talented
band who are clearly at their peak.
The thing that I really like about Fei Comodo's
sound is the fact that they cram so much into
their songs and you are pretty much guaranteed
not to be left feeling bored, one minute frontman
Marc Hall is screaming his bollocks off and the
next minute he’s gracing the airwaves with
more toned down sing along vocals, same with the
guitar riffs one minute they are big and loud
sounding and then the next they are more toned
down, the breakdowns throughout the songs are
stunning and are in all the right places, Fei
Comodo are one talented 5 piece outfit and it’s
about time they get the recognition that they
truly deserve, it’s only a matter of time
before Fei Comodo shoot up from being the band
that supports all the heavyweight bands in the
UK hardcore scene on tour to being the band that
everyone wants to support.
