Alkaline Trio are back on the scene and gearing
up to release their sixth studio album Agony And
Irony which happens to be their first release since
they signed to Epic earlier in the year. The last
full length album release by Alkaline Trio was released
nearly 3 years ago, back in May 2005, now this seems
like quite a long time ago but technically Alkaline
Trio have never stopped working or really left the
scene, Matt released the debut album with his side
project Heavens back in September 2006, Alkaline
Trio released their second b-side and rarities compilation
album titled Remains in January 2007 to mark their
departure with Vagrant records, they also contributed
a new song 'Fire Down Below' to the 2007 Warped
Tour Compilation and they have now just re-released
their debut album Goddamnit on Asian Man Records
with a bonus dvd and bonus tracks to mark the 10
year anniversary of the albums release.
Its been announced that the sixth studio album by
Alkaline Trio titled Agony And Irony will be released
on the 30th June 2008, now this still seems like
a long time away but to ease the pain the band have
previewed two new songs 'In Vein' which happens
to start off sounding like a bouncy ska song before
branching out into the classic upbeat Alkaline Trio
signature sound, the second song is 'Help Me' which
is the bands lead single which will be released
during the run up to the album.
'Help Me' is a great return for Alkaline Trio,
the song shows that the band continue to move
on in sound with every release, the song is extremely
infectious and a lot more upbeat and poppy than
the majority of the Alkaline Trio back catalogue,
the song opens with a short piano introduction,
and soon after the drums, bass and guitar come
in, there is nothing too special about the instrumental
work but it all seems to stand out in its own
way, Matt’s vocals are as good as ever just
a lot more infectious, the chorus is quite repetitive
but in a good way and after just a couple of listens
it will be hard to shake the lyrics "Help
me, help me wont you, sing me, sing me one last
song, help me, help me, somebody help me save
me from myself" out of your head.
Now if you go to pretty much any music forum
you will find posts from people slagging off 'Help
Me' claiming that it’s too mainstream, too
poppy, sounds like Fall Out Boy and that the new
album will suck. Now these comments are to be
expected but quite laughable at the same time.
For a start, for someone to claim that an album
will suck on the judgement of one song shows a
lack of brains and thoughts, for the song to be
compared to Fall Out Boy, shows a lack of musical
knowledge as the comparison simply isn’t
there and as for the mainstream and poppy comments
they are spot on but it’s not a bad thing
and you can’t fault a band for wanting to
appeal to a wider audience and also progress with
their music as long as they stay as true to themselves
as possible. It doesn’t matter who the band
is but debut major label releases are always met
with a big mixed reaction.
2008 is going to be the year that makes Alkaline
Trio, 'Help Me' is a great song that will appeal
to masses of people and bring Alkaline Trio a
bigger fan base than they could imagine. I personally
prefer 'In Vein' over 'Help Me' as it has a much
better Alkaline Trio vibe about it but it wouldn’t
appeal to the masses like 'Help Me' does.
5/5
