Black Tide are Americas answer to the UK's very
own band The Zico Chain, Black Tide have such a
similar catchy grunge rock sound with the only difference
being that Black Tide are still in their teens and
have the backing of the Osbournes. The members of
Black Tide range from 14-19 and the band made a
name of their self during the 2007 Ozzfest where
they were kicked off the Jagermeister stage for
being too young which then called for Sharon Osbourne
to place the band on the main stage to open the
touring festival daily.
The band have just released their debut album
'Light From Above', the album was produced by
Johnny K who has worked with some huge bands such
as Disturbed, Machine Head, Soil and many others.
The album opens with the lead single 'Shockwave',
the guitar work is great and the two guitar solo's
on offer are breathtaking, the chorus is extremely
catchy and reminds me so much of any chorus by
England’s very own The Zico Chain. Frontman
Gabriel Garcia's vocals are so fast and full of
energy and it’s quite hard to believe that
he has such impressive vocals at the early age
of 15, yes front man Gabriel Garcia is only 15
and has already toured across America with some
of the biggest metal bands in the world at the
moment.
'Shout' is more of a toned down song and lacks
the catchiness of the previous track but once
again the guitar work on offer is outstanding
and you have to hand it to Black Tide that they
sure know how to knock out some killer guitar
solo's.
The acoustic introduction to 'Warriors Of a Time'
is long but before you know it this Iron Maiden
sound kicks in and the song fully runs on this
Iron Maiden sound with lots of backing vocals
of 'Woah, Woah, Woah', the song is long and epic.
'Give Me A Chance' see's the band returning to
their Zico Chain style sound but in a more toned
down way, the song is one of the slowest songs
on offer on the album but once again frontman
Gabriel's vocals shine. The opening guitar riff
of 'Let Me' is killer and the fast paced action
of 'Live Fast Die Young' is worth checking out.
Black Tide have not only mastered the sound they
want on Light From Above but they have also done
a very brave thing and covered the classic Metallica
song 'Hit The Lights', now this is something that
many people will hate Black Tide for just for
the reasons no one can play Metal music like Metallica
can and nobody can do Metallica like Metallica
do, but to be honest the cover on offer here isn’t
too bad, the guitar work is quite different due
to the sound that Gabriel and Alex have adopted
but in my opinion this is a good thing as it slightly
takes the feel away and makes the song sound slightly
like Black Tide's own, however I will say that
Gabriel Garcia's vocals are no where near as good
as James Hetfield's here and that’s what
the song is really lacking on.
The album finishes with the title track 'Light
From Above', the song has a long progressive introduction
and develops a totally different sound than what
has been on offer throughout the rest of the album,
maybe this is a taster of the direction that the
band want to head on to in the future.
As far as debut albums go, Light From Above is
pretty good and Black Tide have a lot of potential,
the band are still really young and they have
a lot of time ahead of them to try and spiral
on to be one of the next big metal bands, if they
continue to write great songs such as 'Shockwave'
then they are going to have a bright future, the
only downside to the band is that they still haven’t
created their own sound and are not original but
only time will tell if this becomes a problem
for the band.
