Album Review
Five - Hesperus5ive - Hesperus

Before you start wondering, no I haven’t gone soft and wrote a review of the failed British boy band 5ive's latest album release, 5ive are infact an instrumental metal band from Boston Massachusetts in America and have just released their third full-length album Hesperus, now most people that have read my reviews in the past will known I’m not a big fan of instrumental albums as I tend to get bored very easily hearing the same riff being played over and over again for 5 minutes, however I thought I would give 5ive a fair listen.

The album kicks off with 'Gulls' which starts off with distorted feedback from the guitars, heavy drum rolls soon kick in with guitar riffs coming and going every so often. The song tends to get a bit repetitive as the drums and guitar riffs rotate through the whole song. 'Big Sea' is more of a heavier song it starts off with a bit of an echoey, stringy guitar introduction which gets slightly louder as time goes on and before you know it an assault of heavy guitar riffs kick in, but once that happens you can sense what the rest of the song is going to be like and running at over 7 minutes it tends to get a bit to boring and repetitive.

'Kettle Cove' is a beast of a track, it’s pretty fast, features a lot of distortion and some really fast guitar riffs and the best thing about the track is it doesn’t out stay its welcome due to the fact that it’s on for less than 3 minutes. 'Heel' is another short track that runs for just over 2 minutes, the track is extremely chilled out with really laid back guitar playing.

The album finishes with 'News 1' and 'News 2' the two tracks combined go on for nearly 21 minutes and to be honest it does absolutely nothing for me apart from bore the hell out of me.

Hesperus by 5ive is very experimental, but it seems to me that the band don’t really know when to finish a track, the tracks on offer are either to long or too short, there is no in-between but then again it could just be me being fussy, I’d imagine this album would be more enjoyable locked in a small room whilst stoned.

2/5
