Solo acoustic rock music is something I have always
had a soft spot for, it’s the kind of music
you can really chill out to and listen to know matter
what mood you are in. When I received Claire Toomey's
acoustic EP 'Found' through the post I didn’t
really know what to expect, but after just two listens
I was hooked.
Claire Toomey has a poppy acoustic rock sound
about her and has really beautiful vocals that
are a cross of Alanis Morrisette meets Sheryl
Crow, but the best bit about Claire is her song
writing talent, the lyrics throughout the EP are
really well thought out, the guitars are stripped
down and Claire’s vocals take centre stage
and shine above everything else.
The EP opens up with the title track 'Found',
which starts off with some beautiful sounding
acoustic guitar work, and seconds later Claire's
extremely confident sounding vocals come in, it’s
not until about a minute through the song that
her vocals really shine as she sings "What
you lost, I have found, What You Lost, I Have
Found".
Track two 'Somewhere To Hide' features really
stripped down guitar work that you can just about
hear over Claire's vocals. The vocals are full
of melody and really make the song sound special.
'Still Life' is another really instrumentally
toned down song, that gives Claire more of a chance
to work her magic with her beautiful vocals, the
vocals change pace throughout the song giving
a slight bit of variety to sound.
I have never heard of Claire Toomey until I received
this EP and I have since found out that she is
an eighteen year old singer/songwriter and has
gone down an unusual route to distribute her EP,
instead of taking the traditional route of selling
the EP at shops and shows, she has asked her loyal
fan base to leave 250 individually numbered copies
of this EP in public places across the country
so that they might be discovered by unsuspecting
listeners, who would, in turn pass them on.
Now I’m not sure if Claire Toomey's unusual
way of distributing the EP has paid off, but if
you have found a copy of the EP then seriously
give it a listen as this singer/songwriter sounds
so positively confident and has all the right
ingredients for success.
