I have heard of Gay For Johnny Depp for some time now and have always
found their name quite amusing but have never really taken the effort
to find out who the band are or what their music sounds like, well that’s
until now. I recently received 'Politics Of Cruelty' which is the first
full-length release from Gay For Johnny Depp, the album has been released
on Captains Of Industry Records, which is the home to my favourite UK
screamo band Silicon Vultures.
So Gay for Johnny Depp are named after their obsession for the world famous
Hollywood actor that half the world seems to love and worship but is their
music any good? Well the answer is yes if you are into short but fast
screamo songs, the bands debut album 'Politics Of Cruelty' is 12 tracks
long and runs for a mere 21 minutes with most songs running for under
2 minutes and only the last track running for a half decent length of
time.
The album opens up with 'Cumpassion' which has a 40 second instrumental
introduction with some great riffage and drums rolls, the vocals screamo
vocals come in straight after the long introduction, the vocals sound
oddly off putting on this track but from track 2 'You Have A Theory, I
Have A Gun' everything seems to look up, the vocals are still in your
face screamo with the lyrics not being understandable what so ever but
every word seems to fit nicely into place and the song finishes with a
nice addition of more understandable vocals.
'Belief In God Is So Adorable' and is quite a chilled out sounding track
compared to the rest of the album and the vocals are more squeaky sounding
rather than the signature screams that’s plastered over the majority
of the album. 'Lights Out!' is a fast hardcore screamo song that chops
and changes in sound throughout the 2 minutes of the song, one second
everything’s fast and furious and then next everything’s more
laid back with a change of vocals.
Gay For Johnny Depp have created a very listenable album with some quality
moments, but the only problem is that every song is on for such a little
time, that once you start getting into a song it finishes which makes
it hard to really enjoy the album fully because before you know it 21
minutes has passed and the album has finished and everything’s a
big blur making it really hard to pick out a standout moment.
3.5/5
