Taking Back Sunday's lead guitarist and co-vocalist Fred Mascherino left
the band earlier this year to concentrate full time on his solo project,
The Color Fred, a project that has been in Fred's eyes well before he
joined Taking Back Sunday. Fred has been busy working with producer Lou
Giordano and has now completed the first The Color Fred album 'Bend To
Break'.
'Bend To Break' is the first chance that Fred has had to prove how talented
he is as a musician and how he can be an outstanding frontman, Fred plays
both bass and guitar on the album as well as handling vocal duties, he
is joined on a few tracks by Steve Curtiss on drums, PJ Bond on backing
vocals and bass and Clint Stelfox on piano but the majority of the work
is Fred Mascherinos handy work.
The album opens up on top form with the ever so upbeat 'Get Out' which
isn’t far from the sound Fred is used to with his ex band Taking
Back Sunday, the song is a 3 minute long fast melodic song that you can
listen to time and time again without getting bored. 'If I Surrender'
is another fast catchy song with Fred's vocals on top form, and songs
like this prove that Fred has made the right choice leaving Taking Back
Sunday to concentrate on his own music.
There are so many outstanding songs on the album but my favourite song
has to be the powerful poppy-ness of 'Hate To See You Go' the song is
fast and poppy from start to finish and the strong catchy chorus of "Well
I'm gonna hate to see you go but I've been impossible I know" is
the highlight of the album.
The Color Fred isn’t all about fast catchy songs as their are a
number of slow songs on the album such as 'It Isn't Me' which features
a beautiful piano piece running throughout the song. 'Empty House' is
another chilled out track where Fred's vocals are very strong and the
guitars are very minimal.
'Don't Pretend' closes the album and is yet another slow song but happens
to be the strongest out of all the laid back songs, Fred's vocals sound
beautiful here and as soon as the song picks up in pace it’s not
long before it becomes laid back again.
Overall 'Bend To Break' is an outstanding album and one that is going
to be in my CD player for some time to come, Fred made such a hard decision
to leave such a successful band as Taking Back Sunday to concentrate on
his on solo project, but with a result as good as 'Bend To Break' you
can see why Fred was eager to release a solo album, let’s hope the
future holds more great solo music from Fred Mascherino.
