Then the electro-piano and kick drum into begins, your mind conjuresup
images of crazy circus tops and general head-fuck goings on. And the vocals,
almost identical to the sound of the male vocalist from Shiny Toy Guns.
And besides this crazy-circus element, the opening track "The President"
doesn't really go anywhere, sadly. Luckily, track two, "The Alternative,"
delivers a generally awesome songs from start to finish, with a Soulwax-like
pace and rhythm. Electric effectsbubble gracefully from the underlying
thumps of bass, as a skilledmale vocal ripples over the top, dancing off
the beats. That sounds abit arty doesn't it. No, this is just really good.
From then on, the remaining ten tracks are a mis-match of hard hitting
electro tracks, cheesy-rhythmic ballads, and much slower numbers.Equally,
there's a similar mix of great and questionable songs. "Songof Imaginary
Beings" probably draws the most out of Soulwax, and could appear
on one of their CDs quite easily. All of the songs seem to holdthe same
elements, you know, that guff I churned out about ripples and bubbles.
Some just vary in texture, these are the weaker ones, in my opinion. But
tracks like "The Negative Sex" and "Spit It Out,"
really develop through-out, sticking more to the structure of a regular
indiesong, and to be fair, towards the end of the album, the sound isshifting
with more of an indie-influence, and it's getting really good.
Ending on a gentle yet powerful piano track called "This Will Make
YouLove Again," with no heavy hitting drum-beat, the album has completely
faded from electro/dance to indie/alternative. To conclude I'd say that
these guys are certainly talented, but the fact that the albumdoesn't
have one over-arching mood, might make it hard to listen to. It's rare
you'll be in two contrasting moods at once. But if you're feeling particularly
neutral and just want some good music, thiscertainly hits the spot.
