Siouxsie And The Banshees are a band who formed a few years before I was
even born and the band became ever so popular once they finally got totally
focused on the group and were together for a good 17 years and during
their time together many people loved the bands look and strong sound.
Now the band have split Siouxsie has gone solo and has just released her
debut solo album 'Mantaray'.
Most people become a bit sceptical when an artist comes out of a band
and does a side project or releases their own solo material no matter
how big they are or how long they have taken to do it, and it’s
no different with Siouxsie, I think fans of Siouxsie are really going
to love this album and I think people who have never took the time of
day to check out any of her material before will think what the fuck is
this at first but end up getting into it after a few listens.
'Mantaray' is a pop album that relies on electronic synths and buzzy sounds
and can be compared to Goldfrapp and The Sohodolls in places but still
sound so much different from them at the same time. The album opens with
'Into A Swan', which has quite a strong industrial sound with stunning
synths coming and going throughout the song, Siouxsie's vocals are quite
strong sounding and really add to the groove of the song.
My favourite track on the album is the stomping yet catchy 'About To Happen'
the song really builds up and ends up being a really outstanding electronic
sounding song where the vocals really do stand out and become quite catchy.
'Here Comes That Day' is quite a jazzy sounding song and is also the kind
of song that you would expect to hear in a James Bond movie.
With Siouxsie's solo album, its the kind of album that takes a lot of
time and effort to get into, it’s not the kind of album you are
going to put on once and fall in love with, you will most probably think
this is weird after the first listen but the more you listen to it the
more it will appeal to you and this is mainly due to the fact that 'Mantaray'
sounds so different from anything musically around at the moment, yeah
you can compare certain synths and sounds to bands such as Goldfrapp but
that is it, the overall sound of this album is weird yet good.
3.5/5
