Serotone are a band from Scotland who formed back in 2003, the band have
a sound that mixes the best of progressive-metal and post-hardcore and
you can clearly tell that the band are influenced by Tool and the Deftones
just by listening to them. I first heard of Serotone when they released
their single 'Shine Away' two months ago and I was instantly impressed
with the bands overall sound despite the production sounding slightly
dodgy and now the band have finally finished their debut album and it’s
about to be released on Re-Action Records.
'Equilibria' suffers from the same dodgy production as the bands debut
single 'Shine Alone' did which is a bit of a disappointment but if you
don’t think about the production to much you will realise that Shine
Alone are a great band who write and play some extremely good songs.
The album starts of with '13' which starts off with some on and off drumming
and quite soothing vocals that builds up the longer the song goes on,
the guitar work is quite technical and progressive which really adds depth
to the song.
'Flaw' is a great song that starts off with a long progressive introduction
sounding like something you would expect on a Tool album. 'Fading' has
a particularly interesting introduction and features some soaring vocals
and the guitar work is outstanding and really stands out leaving the song
quite an anthemic offering. 'Blinded' starts off really mellow but the
song builds up in time to a really catchy chorus. 'No Parts' is quite
similar to 'Blinded' in the way that the song is quite a mellow progressive
song with a long Tool sounding introduction that explodes into an outstanding
memorable chorus making one of the best songs on the album.
My favourite song on the album still has to be the bands single 'Shine
Alone' mainly due to how much the song has going on at once and how well
it all fits together, the guitars are spot on and Dale's vocals are simply
outstanding and oozing with emotion, you seriously need to hear this song
to understand how good it really is.
Overall 'Equilibria' is a great album where the majority of the songs
are quite outstanding with each song sounding totally different from the
last, the only disappointing thing with the album is that the production
is quite dodgy and it’s something I thought would of been sorted
out from the same bad production of their debut single 'Shine Alone' but
don’t let that put you off checking out Serotone as they are a talented
band and 'Equilibria' is quite a listenable album despite this.
