When Fightstar first came together and released their debut EP 'They Liked
You Better When You Were Dead', the band gained a huge fan base but at
the same time got a lot of shit from the press and music fans alike who
claimed that Fightstar were only doing well because of Charlies previous
success with the chart topping pop act, Busted. The bands EP was met with
mixed reviews and there live shows were made difficult with people coming
just to chant Busted and throw things at the band thinking it was the
cool thing to do, this craze soon died off when the band released their
debut full length album 'Grand Unification' and completed a slot at the
2006 Download festival, but some people still weren’t fully convinced
and expected Fightstar to struggle keeping it together as a band.
Twelve months on and Fightstar are back with their second full length
studio album 'One Day Son, This Will All Be Yours' and it seems like the
band have listened to all the criticism they have received since they
became a band and have come back with a more mature sound and an album
that totally outdoes 'Grand Unification' in everyway possible, the song
writing is spot on, the lyrics are more mature, Charlie and Alex's dual
vocals can’t be faulted and there are moments of pure heaviness
which is something many people thought Fightstar weren't capable of and
will end up pleasing a lot of people.
The album opens up with '99' a song that the band put up on their website
for their fans to download for free a couple of months ago to give their
fans a taster of what the new album was going to sound like and is the
perfect song to open the album. The bands current single 'We Apologise
For Nothing' is a great song and a straight forward rock song that you
will fall in love with once you have fully gotten into it.
The piano introduction to 'Floods' is the first sign you see of how much
effort has been put in and how different Fightstar are doing things this
time around making each song sound so much different than the last by
putting in a lot of different techniques. The near title track 'One Day
Son' is such a technical song with so much going on, the opening guitar
riffs are heavy.
The most stand out song on the album is 'Deathcar', the song starts off
with raw aggressive screams and then calms down for the verse and then
gains heaviness again with aggressive screams of "You make me fucking
sick". The instrumental outro of 'Deathcar' sounds like it wouldn’t
be too out of place on a Pantera or Machine Head song and this is the
first sign on the album that Fightstar are serious musicians and not to
be fucked with or put down.
Another song that stands out a bit is 'You And I', the song is a lot different
from what Fightstar have done before and is a song that has been proper
toned down but is full of sweet harmonies, the first time you hear the
song you will be a bit shocked but the beauty of the song will soon sink
in.
The introduction to 'Amaze Us' sounds like Fightstar have been practising
with Rage Against The Machine with guitar riffs sounding ever so similar
which seem to come and go throughout the song making yet another stand
out track.
'Funeral For A Friend are currently the most hyped band in the scene at
the moment and have been for way to long, it’s now time for Fightstar
to take their crown as Fightstar are one of the best bands blasting out
of Britain at the moment with so much more to offer than other bands around.
One Day Son, This Will All Be Yours' is a work of art and shows how serious
Fightstar are as a band and the album is surely going to gain the band
a wide range of new fans especially with the added heaviness and the fact
none of the 12 tracks on the album can be faulted.
5/5
