Fair To Midland are quite a new band to me and I’m pretty sure that
they are quite new to most people reading this review despite the band
forming a good 9 years ago back in 1998. Since the band formed they have
been like a DIY band doing everything themselves and have been named as
one of the worlds best unsigned bands on a number of occasions. However
the band are now signed to Serjical Strike, the record label set up by
System Of A Down frontman Serj Tankian and this is a great move for the
band as they are now signed to a well known label who lets the band create
the music themselves instead of pushing them into a more commercial sound
like most major labels tend to do these days.
The band have just released their new album 'Fables From A Mayfly: What
I Tell You Three Times Is True' and is their debut UK release. The album
opens with the bands current single 'Dance Of The Manatee' which starts
off with a rip roaring heavy guitar riff which soon backs down and vocalist
Darroh Sudderth's melodic vocals come in building up to the stunning chorus.
There is so much to like about Fair To Midland, the guitars are quite
progressive and would give bands like Coheed and Cambria a run for their
money, the drums aren’t anything special but you definitely notice
they are there, the keyboards really adds to the bands sound and works
well with the other instruments and the vocals really makes the bands
sound as Darroh Sudderth's vocals are stunning and forever changing from
melodic vocals to crazy screams.
If you like one song on the album you will end up liking the whole album
as everything’s quite similar sounding but saying that, each song
does have a bit of variety. The highlights on the album have to be the
bands current single 'Dance Of The Manatee', the extremely random named
'April Fools and Eggmen' is another really good upbeat song and so is
'Kyla Cries Cologne'.
It’s fair to say that Fair To Midland are quite a creative and random
band and I’m sure most people will see that for themselves when
they look at the bands album cover and reads the track listing and even
more so if they go deeper and read the lyrics to the songs. This album
features a lot going on making it a lot different from most bands around
at the moment, the album is going to appeal to a lot of people and is
an album that you won’t get bored of to easily.
