Every year you get a lot of new indie bands on the horizon who promise
to be the next big and only one or two of the bands make it whilst the
others slowly fade away and people tend to forget about them until they
dust down the cd collection years later, luckily for the Maccabees they
are one of the few bands who have made it partly due to the backing of
NME magazine and also due to being an extremely hard working band gigging
at every opportunity whether it be in the UK toilet sized venues, festivals
or playing in the US - the Maccabees have done it.
If you question The Maccabees fans on what their favourite track of 'Colour
It In' is, the majority of the fans will say 'Latchmere' or 'Precious
Time' due to the fact that 'Latchmere' is one of the bands early songs
that appeared on their EP and 'Precious Time' is such an upbeat, stand
out and catchy song that brought the band in lots of fans. However, the
true standout track and my favourite track of the album has to be 'Toothpaste
Kisses' which also happens to be the bands next single.
'Toothpaste Kisses' is a more of a toned down jazzy sounding love song
that features a laid back acoustic guitar being played throughout, the
lyrics are quite impressive with lyrics of "lay with me, I’ll
lay with you. We'll do the things lovers do. Put the stars in our eyes.
And with heart shaped bruises and late night kisses divine" which
is nicely topped off with a whistling outro.
Overall 'Toothpaste Kisses' is not going to be everyones cup of tea but
if you have heard any of the previous Maccabees material you will realise
just how different and enjoyable this song is.
