Opening with a slow-moving instrumental that just breathes atmosphere
and ambience, this new material from Athlete seems to all be set at a
very gentle pace, the kind of album you can just whack on and have no
quibbles with playing away in the background. Running into the first single
off of the album "Hurricane," all is looking good – expertly
recorded and well written too, still retaining those subtle electronic
underscores from the earlier albums.
The third track, "Tokyo," starts off sounding more like a number
from the Streets, with a bass drum and piano chords. Bloody good though.
When the vocals and guitars kick in, it's clear this is a group much more
musically able and talented, this is awesome.
The whole album in fact, as previously suspected, just bobs along with
eleven tracks of gentle yet fully listenable alternative music. Compared
to the previous album, this isn't one for epics. There's no equivalent
of "Wires" on here, but every track is very good, just not particularly
exciting. If you want something to put on in the car for a long journey,
get out and buy this album. If you want something you can listen to and
then have stuck in your head for weeks to come, and sing along to drunkenly
with friends, check out the previous releases.
3.5/5
