Frontman and co-founder of the Quireboys, Spike is totally dedicated to
music and spends pretty much all of his time writing music or touring.
Recently Spike has been extremely busy working on a new Quireboys album,
a new Damage Control album and also a new solo album titled 'It's A Treat
To Be Alive' which is finally being released in September. Spikes solo
material sounds a lot slower and has a more bluesy feel compared to the
classic rock sound that The Quireboys have.
Most of the songs on the album do sound quite similar mainly due to the
laid back feeling of the album but it’s all so listenable at the
same time. The album deals with many themes such as heartbreak, lost love,
pleasure, pain and many different things Spike has been through in his
life leaving us with a honest sounding album.
The album starts off with 'Have A Drink With Me', which is quite a slow
laid back sounding song that is sung with complete passion. Spike has
quite a raw sounding voice sounding like someone who has smoked plenty
of cigarettes in their time which in my opinion is a good thing because
their is nothing better than raw sounding vocals.
The majority of the album is chilled out and laid back but there are a
few upbeat moments such as on 'Be Good To Yourself' where the song has
a really upbeat vibe with uplifting vocals to match and some rocking classic
guitar riffs.
The other song on the album that sounds different from the rest is Spike's
cover of the classic Slade hit 'Everyday' where he sings the song from
the bottom of his heart and with passion.
'It's A Treat To Be Alive' is not much of an exciting album but it does
have some charm about it and fans of Spike and the Quireboys should definitely
check it out. If you want a nice easy listening rock record that you can
chill out to whilst having a drink and smoke in your own home then I would
recommend that you check out this album as it’s perfect for such
moments.
