Alkaline Trio are one of those bands that manage to get better after every
album. And here we have 'Crimson', the 5th album release by Alkaline Trio.
An album thats been put on hold numerous times by two skateboarding accidents
resulting in Matt Skiba fracturing his wrist and then breaking his left
arm. Too old to skate?
The album starts with a piano introduction to first single 'Time To Waste'.
It is a great start to the album and sets a dark tone, which Alkaline
Trio are well known for. Then we have 'The Poison' which is the shortest
track on the album, clocking in at two minutes and four seconds. It's
a great track which demonstrates how well Alkaline Trio have developed
themselves lyrically and musically.
'Mercy Me' is the stand out track on the album for me. It’s the
most catchy and poppiest track on the album which is almost certain to
be a future single for Alkaline Trio. Saying that most of the songs on
the album are worthy of being singles, with their catchy choruses and
trademark vocals that they are known and loved for.
The songs on the album are still very personal but in a totally different
way, moving on from Skiba’s personal issues to real life crime and
things close to his heart. 'Prevent this Tragedy' is an example of this.
It is a song about the west Memphis three (three teenagers wrongly convicted
of satanic murder in 1994). Then we also have 'Sadie', a song that originally
appeared on the One Man Army split CD. The song is about Sadie Mae Glutz
and is a well produced song.
The album ends perfectly with 'Smoke', the more mellow track.
Overall, 'Crimson' is great. They have managed to develop their unique
sound further. They are more mature, but dark themed and as catchy as
ever. The die hard fans are going to love it and people who have never
heard of them will also be hooked. They will certainly gain a wider fan
base with this album.
'Crimson' certainly wont be leaving my cd player for a long time.
5 /5
