Fiction Plane formed back in 2002 and started off as a two piece band
but soon took on more members to make the band a four piece band. The
band went on and released their debut album 'Everything Will Be Ok' back
in 2003 on MCA Records. MCA folded soon after the bands album release
leaving Fiction Plane label-less, which resorted in the band taking a
long break. The band have now regrouped as a three piece and are just
about to release their second studio album 'Left Side Of The Brain' on
their new record label Bieler Bros Records.
The band claim to be influenced by The Pixies, Radiohead and especially
Nirvana but if you listen to the bands album 'Left Side Of The Brain'
you will notice that the band sound nothing like their so called influences
but sound more like The Police, which is quite weird considering vocalist
and bass player Joe Sumner is the son of sting and the band are opening
up for the Police on their forthcoming reunion tour which see's them tour
some massive stadiums and arenas across the world, which seems to me that
the band are in the music industry for all the wrong reasons and hope
to get big really fast for all the wrong reasons.
'Left Side Of The Brain' opens up with 'Anyone' which has quite a good
introduction but apart from that the song is musically and vocally quite
boring, the chorus picks up in pace but still doesn’t offer any
excitement. 'Death Machine' is a song about war but see's the band sounding
too much like The Police for my liking. 'Two Sisters' is one of the good
songs from the album but it does sound like it’s come straight off
the Police’s greatest hits album which can’t be a good thing
considering everything.
One of the worst songs I have heard in a long time has to be 'It's A Lie'
which opens with Joe Sumner's high pitched squeals of "It's A Lie'
which tend to re-appear throughout the song for the extremely irritating
chorus.
The album title track 'Left Side Of The Brain' is quite a laid back song,
it offers nothing special but is quite a listenable song. 'Drink' is another
proper mellow song that takes a while for the ever depressing vocals to
kick in, and the song appears to be on for 4 minutes 33 seconds too long.
The album finishes with 'Fake Light From The Sun' the song has a long
laid back introduction and the Sting like vocals soon kick in offering
absolutely nothing new.
Overall if you like The Police or Sting you will most probably like Fiction
Plane, but if you don’t I would steer clear from this album as it
is one of the most boring albums I have heard in a very long time. Lead
man Joe Sumner has always tried to avoid being compared to sting, but
when you are his son and you are in a band who sound ever so similar to
your dads band and you then choose to open up for that band it seems like
you’re doing the total opposite.
1.5/5
