Decent are a four piece death metal band from the UK who started off back
in 2000 the band have gone through a number of line up changes before
sticking with their current line up back in 2003. Decent are influenced
by many bands in the metal scene from Carcass, Hatebreed, Slayer, Pantera,
Iron Maiden and many others. The band themselves have a tight heavy sound,
just imagine the heaviness of early Machine Head mixed with the technical
thrash aggression of Carcass and you will be somewhat near the sound of
Descent.
The album starts off with 'Enemies Closer' and it starts off like most
metal albums should start off with some killer guitar riffs and extremely
fast drumming and you almost feel that Robb Flynn from Machine Head's
vocals are going to come in with "Here me now" but instead Ross
White's raw shouts come in which doesn’t take you long at all to
get into. The music is so technical with so much going on in just one
song. To be fair most of the album follows on from here with each song
being extremely technical, fast and heavy. For example, track two, 'My
Failure' has some outstanding guitar work going on and it’s the
kind of stuff you would imagine bands like In Flames or Machine Head playing,
but Descent pulls it off really well with no signs of struggling what
so ever.
Track three 'Unanswered' starts off as a scream a long fest but towards
the middle of the song the vocals become more melodic and understandable
which shows that Descent can clearly mix their vocal styles.
One of the main stand out songs on the album is 'Reveal' the song starts
off with a drum roll and the huge guitar riffs soon follow it up for the
next 30 seconds then the bands dual assault of vocals come in giving the
song a heavy yet catchy vibe. 'Behind Closed Doors' is another song that
stands out well mainly due to the fact that the song has the heaviest
vocals seen on the whole album with really strong raw shout, ones again
the technicality of the guitar work is breathtaking.
Overall Descent are a really promising band in the UK metal scene, they
know how to play their instruments, they know how to make a noise and
they know how to mix everything together to produce some stunning songs.
'This Violent Reality' should help the band become even bigger in the
UK underground scene and maybe catapult them out of the underground scene
for more mainstream success as Descent are definitely a mainstream band
in the making.
