Cardiff five piece Shaped By Fate formed back in 2001 and since that time
the band have had numerous line up changes and played hundreds of shows
which has helped them build up a steady fan base. The band have released
a few ep's since they formed but are now ready to release their debut
full length album 'The Unbeliever' on In At The Deep End Records.
The album opens with 'Launch The Immortal Fleet' which starts off with
some quietly strummed guitar chords but seconds later you feel the music
getting bigger, louder and heavier by the second and from that moment
you know you are in for an extremely heavy 50 minutes. Extreme heaviness
kicks off 'The Unbeliever' with intense heavy riffs being played at every
opportunity and the drumming is so loud and constant it sounds like a
whole army of drummers, the vocals are raw and very heavy.
'They Told Me You Were Dead' starts off with vocalist Paul Fortescue pretty
much screaming his lungs out and following on from the heaviness of the
previous track and the mixture of bass, guitar and drums fit in so well
and create a huge amount of noise. The instrumental song 'My Sun Sets
To Rise Again' is a nice break from the hectic-ness on offer from the
rest of the album and see's the bands instrumental work twist and turn
in sounds through 6 minutes of solid playing and not being too heavy nor
too mellow. The album finishes with 'Destroyed But Not Defeated', which
finishes the album in a heavy fashion that was to be expected.
Shaped By Fate are an talented band and 'The Unbeliever' is the heaviest
album I have heard so far this year and is the kind of album UK metal
really needs, the only downside is most of the songs on the album sound
extremely similar but don’t let that put you off as this is a solid
album and a smashing debut release.
4/5
