Most people can remember the Beastie Boys back in the day when they used
to wear VW car badges around their neck which resulted in most VW's around
the country being badgeless with the bands fans wanting to be like their
heroes. And then there were the days when the bands albums used to be
covered in parental advisory stickers with shops refusing to sell the
album to kids which resulted in the kids parents having to purchase the
albums for them. The band were always in the tabloids for the wrong reasons
and always caused a stir when they returned to the scene. Well the Beastie
Boys are now back and totally different than ever before and have released
a new album titled The Mix-up, which is a full on instrumental album with
no lyrics what so ever.
The Beastie Boys have always been loved for their instrument work and
the raps that go with it but how will people take to a whole new album
of instrumental work and no raps or vocals at all. The Mix-Up opens with
'B For My Name' which features a good mixture of sounds from keyboard
lines, to bass and drums sounds providing an all over funky sound. '14th
Street Break' features some good guitar work but everything else going
on within the track provides a bit to much for me to take in. 'Off The
Grid' starts off with some clear guitar playing and could become a good
song if the band ever choose to re-release it with vocals. 'The Rat Cage'
also features some good guitar playing and the drumming really stands
out. I could go on and write about every song on the album but it wont
do the songs any justice, you will know if you like this album or not
as soon as you listen to it, but sadly for me I’m not bought on
the whole instrumental stuff.
Overall, the Beastie Boys have come up with some good sounds on The Mix-Up
but after listening to a few minutes of each song you tend to get bored
of it and skip on to the next track and so forth. If the Beastie Boys
go back and add vocals to the Mix-Up they could come up with some overall
good songs, but 42 minutes of Beastie Boys instrumental music is too much
to take in with a solid listen and I’m pretty sure I won’t
be coming back to this cd in a hurry.
