"Belt Loops" is the opening track as well as the title of the
EP, and it isn't long before you see why a CD would be named after this
song. It's bloody awesome. High-energy indie rock from an American band
who are hitting loads of Europe's festivals this Summer, and should hope
to go down well with this EP released. A great set of lyrics accompany
this song which, although it doesn't do anything extraordinary, everything
it does, it does perfectly. And the second track "Holliewould Gettaway,"
just demonstrates more of the Films ability to write catchy interesting
indie music. I think I'd love to catch them live, seeming to be so much
energy contained within the music, and I'll admit it's a shame this EP
only has three tracks as I'm more than certain I would quite enjoy a full
album.
The final track is "Blitzkrieg Bop." I hung my head in my hands.
"Oh no," I said to myself, "they haven't gone and made
the mistake of thinking they're punk and covered a song that nearly everybody
has, have they?" And then I pressed play. Oh my days. Clearly not.
Yes; it's still the same song. But it's about half the speed, and played
with out of tune stringed instruments that sound closer to a banjo than
an electric guitar, along with harmonica and tambourines and a whole host
of raw country instruments. It's interesting, I'll give them that. In
fact, it's more than interesting. It's fantastic.
