Preston's Rival Faction are quite a new metal band who have been together
for about a year now, the band started off with the release of a two track
demo cd that had airplay on XFM which helped the band make a name of themselves
in the national music scene. The band have now just released their debut
five track ep titled 'Oi Oi, Here's The Poison' which saw the band head
of to Cardiff to work with Romesh Doangoda who has worked with the likes
of Lostprophets who have been huge for years and also The Blackout and
Kids In Glass Houses who are both hardworking bands who have the potential
to become huge, has Romesh Doangoda's magic worked with Rival Faction?
You can clearly tell that a lot of time and effort has gone into the
release of 'Oi Oi, Here's The Poison' first of all the glossy artwork
is pretty impressive with cartoon images of bats, zombies and blood which
gives you a sense of what the bands music will be like. The five tracks
on the ep sound well produced and considering all the band members are
still in their teens they haven’t done badly in creating an energetic
sound.
Opening track 'New Demographic' features some great guitar work and Sean
Marshall's vocals fit in so well with the overall music of the band. 'Shh,
It's A Library' sounds more hardcore than it does metal, the vocals are
screamo from start to finish, and the song becomes catchy in places. 'Man
Your Station' is quite a fast track and once again Sean Marshall's vocals
really shine. 'The Knife Party . . . You're Invited' has a really interesting
bouncy introduction. The EP finishes with 'New Riot', which is one of
the strongest tracks on the EP, where everything sounds so perfect, the
vocals change from screamo to sing a long many times throughout the song
yet fit in so well. The guitar riffs are outstanding as well.
Rival Faction have created a really good EP with 'Oi Oi, Here's The Poison'
and have a really energetic sound, all the band members are still in their
teens and if they continue to make such quality songs they could be a
band worth watching over the next couple of years.
