Distance In Embrace - Utopia Versus ArchetypeDistance In Embrace - Utopia Versus Archetype

German four piece Distance In Embrace are an emotionally charged post hardcore band who have a range of influences from Thrice to Portishead to the Deftones and you can definitely tell this from the mix of sounds on the bands debut album 'Utopia Versus Archetype'.

The band album 'Utopia Versus Archetype' is an album that takes a lot of time to get into it due to the forever changing of music styles for example on track two 'On The Verge' it starts off with fast played punk riffs with screamo vocals played over the top but as soon as you get used to it, sing a long vocals come in and the song mellows down then before you know it everything speeds up and gets all shouty again, overall a good song that takes some time to get into.

The guitar work and drumming on 'Each Separate Dying Ember' is top notch and the solo bits are pretty damn good as well, but once again the vocals are a huge mixture with shouty vocals soon turning to more listenable sing a long vocals which sadly doesn’t work too well with the bands sound. 'New Avenues' seems all over the place and a very rushed song with the vocals feeling really out of place.

'Versus The Archtype' is quite a heavy song and one of the good songs on the album. The mixture of fast paced guitars, constant drumming and screamo vocals really work well. 'End=Ever' starts off hardcore like most of the songs on the album but really gets toned down half way through where everything is close to being silent. 'Of The Deepest Dye' closes the album and is quite a catchy song that features some quality breakdowns.

'Utopia Versus Archtype' is not a great album but is not a bad album either, the band can clearly play their instruments well but their is too much going on at once for you to ever fully get into this album. It’s the kind of album you would listen to a couple of times and then forget you had the album or what it sounded like.

2/5
