The Gossip have been around for over 5 years now but it’s only really
the past year that has seen the band gain a name of themselves. The bands
single 'Standing In The Way Of Control' was re-released after the song
was used as the theme tune for the hit E4 show, Skins and shot the Gossip
into the limelight. It’s now hard for a week to go by without seeing
lead singer Beth Ditto featured in major newspapers either naked, wearing
skin tight clothing or generally making a tit out of her self with best
friend Kate Moss. The band are now back with a new single 'Jealous Girls'
which they hope is going to follow on from the success of 'Standing In
The Way Of Control'.
'Jealous Girls' was originally supposed to be released back in February
but due to 'Standing In The Way Of Control' being used as the theme for
Skins and the fans of the show loving the song it would of been stupid
for the Gossip not to re-release the song. So five months on and 'Jealous
Girls' is finally being released, the song is a lot different and doesn’t
shine how the previous single did, but it’s still a strong indie
song where vocalist Beth Dittos vocals just cant be faulted, the only
downside to the song is that the drumming sounds quite tinny. The single
for 'Jealous Girls' also features a live version of the song which was
recorded at the intimate 100 Club in London, I personally prefer the live
version over the studio version just because you can tell more passion
and energy was put into it with Beth Ditto screaming through the chorus
of the song.
The other b-side on the single is a song called 'Coal To Diamonds' which
is featured on the bands current album and is a really toned down mellow
song compared to the rest of the songs I have heard from the Gossip. Beth
Dittos vocals once again shine and so does the constant drumming.
The Gossip are a really talented band and 'Jealous Girls' is a top indie
song that deserves to do well. You are definitely going to get the best
out of the band if you go and see them live, that’s if you can handle
seeing vocalist Beth Ditto prancing around stage in spandex sweating for
over an hour, but I’m sure it’s worth it.
4/5
