I think there's something in the water in Austria, perhaps punk rock's activists
decide to move over from the UK when they retire in search of a quiet life,
but can't help pissing in the mountain streams to see what effect it has
on new home grown bands? Rentokill are the latest in a line of excellent
Austrian punk and hardcore outfits from the stable that brought us Redlightsflash
and Antimaniax. Ironically sharing a name with a company who specialise
in getting rid of pests, it was refreshing to hear opener "discontent
industry" fire seamlessly from strummed, octaved guitar, into a killer
riff and double time drums, as I've been disappointed with the current trend
for UK punk bands that don't really threaten to kick you in the balls enough
for my liking (not that I'm really up for getting kicked in the balls at
all, but you know what I mean).
With Rentokill, what you see is what you
get, and from 10 seconds into track 1, vocalist Jack's throaty melodies
set the standard for a lengthy stint of political, melodic hardcore, with
the band giving props to NOFX, Descendants, Fugazi, 7 Seconds, Avail and
The Dead Kennedys.
The track Primetime killers does feel a little like the
album's token ska track, until it kicks into a Rancid-a-like singalong chorus,
and at 15 tracks, the album may be slightly too long to keep the energy
and intensity up.
However, mainland Europe seems to know what it likes,
and its bands keep producing heartfelt punk records that I believe in, and
don't bother to follow the next new trend. Rentokill stick to what they
know, it may be a well trodden path, full of aging yet still capable bigger
brothers, but this is a fantastic example and I like it.
4/5
