The Higher are a band who formed back in 2002 in Las Vegas and signed to
Epitaph records in 2006 where the band have just released their debut album
'On Fire'.
If you are a fan of Fall Out Boy, Panic At The Disco and even Simple
Plan you are going to be in for a treat with The Higher as they mix emo,
punk, pop, R&B and a few electro sounds to come up with their infectious
upbeat sound that will leave you listening to most songs over and over
again.
The album opens up with the bands lead single 'Insurance' which is the
most poppy song on the album and also one of the best songs on the album.
The song has a bit of an electro/rock feel about it and Seth Trotter's
vocals are so infectious the lyrics will be going around your head for
hours after you have finished listening to it.
Not everything on the album is poppy, for example 'Guts' is one of the
surprise songs on the album and has quite a dark sound/feel about it with
a good mixture of guitar sounds and decent lyrics.
My favourite song on the album has to be 'Rock My Body' it’s so
upbeat, catchy and has the best electro feel on the album and I can guarantee
you will have the lyrics "I thought the way that she moved, meant
the way that she tasted, Then I ripped the seams right from her lips A
captivating experience that left me here with an intoxicating kiss"
due to the way they are sung in sequence with the dance beats.
The first R&B signs kick in with 'Weapons Wired' which also has a
Fall Out Boy feel about it as well and maintains the catchiness of the
album. 'Darkpop' is a really fast poppy electro sounding track which cant
be faulted
Most of the album is good but there are some bad points for example 'Histionics'
is a bit of a cringe worthy song with the way it’s got clapping from
start to finish and sounds like a typical boy band love song that just shouldn’t
of been included on this album. 'Can Anyone Really Love Young' is very R&B
orientated and is quite a boring song that slightly gets saved by the chorus.
Fall Out Boy's Patrick Stump even makes an appearance on the album with
his remix of 'Pace Yourself' which is cheesy R&B/Pop song which has
been screwed over to heavenly on computer and sadly doesn’t do anything
for the band, there is also a secret track at the end if you let the song
carry on running, but to be honest, it’s not really worth waiting
for.
I really do like the Higher and I think 'On Fire' is a pretty good album
it does have a few bad songs dotted around the album which are mainly
the more R&B sounding songs but don’t let that put you off because
the good songs are actually excellent and will stick in your head for
time to come.
4/5
